Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
As I sit here and watch the rain pour down in buckets from the dreary gray skies above I realize nature has kept me away from fishing but the upshot is I have all this time to organize my fishing stuff.
After cutting down a Christmas tree today with my daughters I headed to the garage to work on fishing gear, sheeessh how much more stuff do I need. I have a tackle box for steelhead, one for Salmon, one for trout, a soft pack for when I bank fish, a vest and plano storage boxes everywhere.
Is there one system that anybody has that could organize a cross section of tackle for say, Salmon/Steelhead fishing. I'm the kind of person that has to make sure I've got a little of everything...well almost...so I can adapt to the fishing conditions on a given day. This comes from my Marine Corps training I suppose, Adjust and Adapt...LOL!
I know each time I fish with someone new I see new and cool ideas for fishing stuff but haven't gotten around to using anything new. Stuck in my ways I guess...LOL..
Who has the ultimate tackle organizing system?

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
FM2,
Plano makes a tackle cart that can hold 9 plano 3700 plastic boxes. Cabelas had them in their saltwater catalog. Fishermans had them also. Trouble is they want $199.00 for them. I hate to tell you this but I scored 6 of them from Garts on a close out sale for $69.00 a piece! I sold two of them for $100.00 a piece to a couple of buddies. They are the chit. I own far too many plano 3700's with tackle for just about every species that swims. What am I saying? NEVER ENUFF TACKLE! They are really handy though. All you would need is one and then just swap out boxes for different fish. I strap mine to the front of my center console and just wheel it around when on dry land.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
Who needs to organize it? I am a steelhead fisher. I buy it, throw it in the river, then I go buy more.

FM2
The 2 best tackle systems I have found are my Drift Boat and Sled. If it's not in the boat I don't need it. Although I may need a larger boat soon to hold all the gear.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
Right now...I've got one of those soft sided tackle boxes that hold an awful lot of gear. ****** turned me on to this one.
Sometimes tho....I've thought of having just one of those $9.99 boixes set up for each type of fishing I do so as to eliminate that 8 cubic feet of space my soft sided box takes up in the boat.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
My way works good!
I know I have plenty of hooks so long as I can feel them poking me throught the pockets of my vest. You know you need to buy more corkies and bobbers when none fall out as you bend down to land a fish. You can hear all of your lures jingle as you walk down the trails, but you cant use them because they are tangled in your spare line and leaders, which is OK since they are to damn expensive anyhow. I dont need artificial scent, the long lost sand shrimp in one of the pockets from two weeks ago is working just fine. And my lead is easily accessible as it falls through the hole in the back pocket made when I crawled under that farmers fence in 6 inches of freezing mud and tore it open.
Thats steelhead fishing for ya.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
Great topic FM2. I have just been pondering this question recently myself. I want to do what my dear old dad did in his day.
He had a tackle box for every different type of fishing that he did. One labled for trout, one for stugeon, one for salmon, and one for steelhead. (did didnt do bass or crappie  )
But, now I am thinking about going to a large plano like Dots, where you can interchange plastic trays. You could have a tray filled with different types of gear for different types of fishing. For example, going for steelhead I would insert the trays containing plugs, corkies, spin-n-glows etc, for that trip. The top compartment could contain the things that I use every trip such as scents, swivels, beads, knives, scissors, eye shadow....ooops, NOT etc. The reason I havent gone through with this plan is that I would have to invest alot of money, and in the meantime, what I have does work, after all...Maybe Santa is listening??
Looking forward to hearing other answers to this problem.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
I've pondered this question also. Never gave it much thought until I noticed my Crestliner getting a little bow-heavy! I use the tackle bags, have graduated to TWO of the things completely full of crap! Filling your own boat is one thing, but get invited to go on someone else's boat and you have trouble! I spent a day with Jellyhead on the water and the first thing I found when getting ready to go was I had too much stuff! He, on the other hand, had a nicely packed SMALL bag with pretty much everything he needed.
So...I think the cure to the dilemma is to build a rack in thy garage to hold all of the 3700 boxes full that you own. Label them with white tape and lettering (deep divers 15-25 feet, shallow runners 0-5 feet, steelhead plugs, salmon trollers, whatever you can relate to) and then buy a couple of GOOD quality bags. Avoid the cheapos, they leak and the zippers go south. Buy something that has good storage, alot of D-clips for all the doo-dads you want to bring, and preferably around here, one that has a waterproof bottom with a raincover.
Take it home, but stop on the way at Bi-Mart and get a can of "Camp Dry". The stuff is pretty much the same as Scotchguard only industrial strength. Spray the bag thoroughly and let dry (don't hang in the house, they stink for awhile!) and load up with ONLY what you are going to use for the day. You'll be amazed at what you DON'T need! Shimano, Plano, and Cabelas offer top of the line bags that will work great.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
I think the real answer is a nice big red SnapOn tool box with lots of pull out drawers.

Re: Who Has The Best Tackle Organizing System !!
FM2, I use those Plano 6"x12"? clear plastic boxes that FNF uses, but I found a smaller plano box/bag to hold them all at Fishermans early this year. It can hold seven of the boxes, four in it's tray racks and three in external pockets. I rarely use more than four on any single trip. Think it was 45$ on sale. The box has a black plastic internal frame the boxes slide into and it's exterior is blue nylon. It's great to grab a single box when your out with others, put one in your vest for a bank trip. I separate lure boxes for different fish runs, sturgeon. One box for staples; hooks, swivels, clips etc. This may not be the ultimate system, but it saves boat space and is flexible.
