Thought this was a pretty interesting article.
It looks at all the effects we've had on the fish runs rather than pointing a finger at one group like many do.
Netted 43,000,000 pounds in one year?!?!?!?! And we thought we remembered some big runs. The only people that seen BIG runs aren’t here any longer.
I copied and pasted the following from the article. Reminds me of someone on here a while back that was arguing the point with me that the white man in the late 1800’s did not hardly contribute to the demise of the salmon runs and that pre-white harvests by the Indians were higher than the white man’s.
“Long before European civilization came to the Northwest, Chinook Indians had a well-developed culture here. Every man, woman and child was thought to consume a pound of fish each day.”
“But the Indians only caught what they themselves could eat, and population estimates near the mouth in 1780, just prior to white contact, are about 2,000………………………..”
“In less than 20 years, 55 canneries were operating on or near the Columbia……………………”
“By 1883, it was the world center for the salmon industry. There were more than 1,700 boats, and the catch reached a record high of 43 million pounds………………….”
Forgot the link to it
