Default Help out a deep sea newb?

Hi,
My buddy just bought a boat large enough to go deep sea fishing. This is new to us and we were hoping to do some halibut fishing but don't know where to go for the under 40 fathom portion of the season. We will be launching out of Newport. Does anyone have gps coordinates for a decent location or know where I could acquire them? Thanks for the help.

Make sure you are ready to go out there.

Go with someone else.
Have radio
GPS
Compass

I agree, go with someone who has experience. Know the weather, swell forcast, and figure it'll be worse than they say. Maybe bring an extra handheld VHF as a backup. It should be downhill from there.

A) Where's your story?

B) Is the boat rigged for trouble? (forget the size for a moment)

C) Notice that Halibut opening this year is on some LARGE tides....

Otherwise welcome aboard!

I keep hearing this but all the issues I find on the news stands are about trout fishing. What month has the bottom fishing in it?

Yep - please. Fish those numbers. It will keep you off the real numbers.

Ya I already know there are no fish off the CR . I just want some of the near shore bottom fishing reef suggestions.

You don’t need numbers just pick a boat and follow it out thats what I am going to do just start following the one that says pole dancer on the side that way all I have to do is fish not the work of finding the fish

PS just kidding listen to what these guys say most now what they are doing i hope

Dustin,

The numbers they report in the mag are the IPHC test fish coordinates. They fish these coordinates every year. Here is the link:

http://www.iphc.washington.edu/halco...7/2k7ssa2a.pdf

I dont know of anyone that fishes these coordinates (well, OK, I've tried them but for nada).

And, please, there really are NO halibut off the CR - they don't exist there in terms of allocation. There are tons on the south coast. I can prove this as the allocations are as follows:

- CR allocation - 18,762#. Split between equally between OR/WA leaves Oregon allocation at 9,387 Lbs
- South coast - 390,848#

Here is a link to the regs:
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/finfi...nmaps/2008.asp

So, CR gets 2.3% of the Oregon allocation. South coast gets 97.6% of the allocation. One can only conclude that there are 97.6% more halibut on the south coast than there on the north coast - right?

I will repeat many of my previous posts. If you have a trailerable boat, please DO NOT fish out of the CR. Leave the miniscule allocation to the local charter guys. It is their livelyhood. Fish Garibaldi and south instead.
