Managing Passwords !!?
how do you manage all the passwords for accounts all over the internet. I have about 50 total passwords that I have to keep track of from paypal to fishing forum () notice no (s) , financial, work related etc.. etc.. etc..
Been in the puter biz a long time, and the latest has worked the best,, just a managed outlook file, oh and don't think you can get to it.. encrypted in password protected app, that is on my put that has 3 other passwords , including one a biometric to get to.
any good after market apps out there that you like, other methods. Oh and even my method has my own encryption built in.. I won't explain but if you got the file you would be missing quite a bit of info.
Be careful don't share too much,, I mainly want to know about applications that can help.

i limit mine to three varriations. the main purpose for only three is due to the fact that on most sites that require a password you get three strikes and then you are out. in other words after three tries they lock it up until you re-verify who you are. also it is good to use numbers, letters and even symbols in a password as i am sure you are more than aware.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
I just write mine on a yellow sticky and put it under my keyboard - I mean that is OK isn't it - knowbody will look there will they? Oh its my street address in case you wanted to know - that is secure enough isn't it, I mean there is a guard at our building and everything so I'm safe aren't I
Actually I use a spreadsheet that is encrypted and password protected using the AES 256-bit algorythm. That is stored on a drive that utilizes whole disk encryption (certificate based from Active Directory) which is pre-boot enabled. Once the machine is running EFS (self generated machine based certificates) protects the data as well and gives us an Orange Book approved system.

If I forget one, I just ask my wife as she remembers everything. (And I mean everything!)

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
I maintain three different series of passwords, each one of which is pretty strong, that have a common, easily variable component. I use one series for public things like websites, where the risk is low. I use another series for personal stuff, like financial records and personal email. The last series is for work stuff. I vary them by changing a number and a special character in each one. This means I can just write the number down, and remember where I'm at with all of them.
An example would Runny97Prune$, which can be change to Runny96Prune! I can just write 97$ or 96! on a sticky, and know where I'm at.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
Check this password management program out:
http://www.roboform.com/php/land.php...paign=roboform
The program installs on a USB flash drive that can be used in any computer you plug it into. The program on the flash drive is passworded providing some security.
A year ago, I was equally overwhelmed by password proliferation - this solution has worked for me.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
The most secure method for managing your passwords at home is creating very strong passwords, writing them down, and storing them someplace like your fire safe. If you write your passwords down you are more likely to change it at regular intervals.
If someone has physical access to your machine they can probablly own your data (encrypted or not).

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
I use ZDNet's Password Pro 32. It's about 10 years old and probably not available any longer. I keep a copy of the install file to reinstall whenever I get a new computer. The program itself is password protected. It will automatically generate a password with up to 16 characters that includes numbers and mixed cases. Being 10 years old its probably not super secure, but I still like it.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
Easy for me, I just ahve one password, Chinook123
Oh darn, now I gotta go change it.
Actually I do waht Silver Hilton does. 3, each for more security. About every 6 months or so I add a new one high level and drop the lower one.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
Do a google search for Any password. I think the current version is 1.44. It is free and pretty darned simple to use. There is a spot to put your username, password and URL for each password. It keeps them all neatly in one little app. All you need to remember is one password to open the program. I highly recommend it.

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
2 or 3 passwords don't work for me,, and many of mine are out of sync for a couple reasons.
1st I have a couple accounts that require you to change the PW every 90 days. And I can't sync all of my account, just would take too long.
I always use strong passwords, but some account fiancial, and other personal ones don't share the same strong charaters - some may omit /& or others, so again my get scattered. Or required 6, 8 minimum ,, or the only 8 character - so the security of the account forces the deltas in most cases.
Then of course I blow it.. caps lock is on, and I keep trying and get locked out.. so that account is out of sync, and so on.
thanks.. I will check out some of the tools above... but I have come to love the button (Click here if you forgot you Password) .
gus
I have about 5-6 core passwords, and some simple ones.. like gus, gusgus, gusgusgus

So your passwords are based on past "disagreements"??!!
Here I thought I had come up with something unique!

Re: Managing Passwords !!?
Couldn't a person just set up an excel spreadsheet that has all of their passwords and usernames in it, then set a password to access that spreadsheet? This way you would really only have to remember the password to get into the spreadsheet?
