Default Montuna

Just wanting to here you alls opinion.

About three years ago a friend of mine bought a new N.R.. With high hopes of fishing .

Last summer he finally got it out for tuna but he is frustrated that he cant use his boat more.

The boat is his and he makes no payment.

Is one trip a season enough to keep it,,,, how about two ?.

How many trips a year does it take to make it worht keeping .

21 ft NR seahawk with OS ,225 yami and a 15 yami kicker .

What about keeping it near the coast for him to use when he gets a chance...

Sorry I had to cut that post short .

Im looking for you opinions about what he should do with his boat .
Sell it ??Then hope for/pay for rides when he can fish , in others boats.

Store it with an ifisher who has space and a need for a nice boat.
Rent it out for Day use ??

My advice is dont sell it ,,, make the effort to use it , more.
But then Im not average either ,, Im a tuna addict .d

What say you ??

With the price of alumnium going up he won't be losing much money on the boat. Are ther no lakes for fishing there, that is a great boat for lake fishing with friends. If he stores it on the Coast does that mean that it will give him more opertunities to go fishing on the coast. Grab a plane ticket and head on over.

I to have the same conditions about my 22 ft N/R OS. I get to use it about 6 to 10 times in the salt a year or there abouts. But I will get to use it a lot more later. So Tell him quit worring about and keep it for that day when he can injoy every day like after retirement time. I picked this one up for that day That I can Just stay at the beach and pick the day's I
want to fish.

KEEP THE BOAT

My Dad went through about a dozen boats and each time he sold one he swore he would never buy another one but he always ended up needing/wanting his own boat again and would do it over & over

I have contemplated selling mine and being a rider but I am bullheaded in a lot of ways and I get irritated on some one else's boat that does things different than me

Once a Capt always a Capt

I am not a good follower I must lead

Since It's paid for...keep it in hopes he get's to use it more in the future, + there has to be some closer Fresh Water uses for it also, like Brownlee Res, I'm going there in a couple weeks myself, & like Hank say's "Once a Capt..always a Capt"

Well, it looks like I'm in the minority here but if you are literally talking about using the boat once or twice a year for Tuna then I say sell it. For one, I would be somewhat worried about motors sitting for so long without use. Also, going 30 to 50 miles offshore should not be taken lightly. The more trips a captian makes the better they get at understanding all the conditions for a safe trip. Seems like one trip a year wouldn't quite cut it in my book but maybe your friend is an old salt with lots of prior experience. Just a thought.

With the price of gas, me thinks there will be plenty of open seats in the future.

Actually ,he has used it for Salmon in the ocean once, for a week.
Caught trout and Muskie from it , and has had it on several lakes.

So it has been used and they did catch tuna (two days ) from it last summer Depoe..

I too am landlocked for most of the year, living as I do 60 miles from western montana. I too own an OS and can only get to the coast 2 -3 times a year. But I do make my trips count and spend atleast 2 weeks in newport yuna fishing. while my boat is home we use it on LPO for Bows and Macs. Certainly the freedom youre friend has of tuna fishing on his own boat is priceless, and is what makes the offshore experience so alluring to many of us. After saying that If tuna fishing came to an end I would sell my boat yesterday.

I have a home on the coast and I pull my boat back and forth from the beach all the time and half the time I don’t even put the boat in the water but I don’t have to ask for a ride if I want to fish. I like to have my own boat and equipment even if it one time a year its fun to do your own thing so my vote is if it is paid for and you can store it out of the weather and run it from time to time keep it….

You all speek my words exactly .

Thats pretty much how I would look at it ,,,,sell it and he will be looking at 70K + to replace it the next day .
Its a sweet ride and will be worth its weight in gold when the kids jump ship and leave the nest .

He reads this board (now that he has done tuna) and you all can give it too him salty dog style .
Matter of fact no fluff or filler ...

You all are much better with words than I am .

Thanks

Have I got a deal for you....

I was just thinking to myself,

"Self, you have lots of space and you should store boats for a fee"

Me being the gracious type I figure, to heck with the money, I'll just maintain and make sure to keep the hull moistened on a regular basis.

Billings.

Owning a boat is a choice . Buying the boat is a small part of owning one.
To make the decision to get a boat requires a degree of comitment .

It would be easy for me to find reasons not to drive all the way to Canada or Depoe just to catch a fish .

I dont own my boat to fish .
I have my boat as life support , insentive to get up and continue to marh on .
I have my boat to create memories with my family, my kids , and myself.

I make all efforts to use my boat as much as possible ,, sometimes at great expense .

Evryone who has a boat and who has ever had a boat went thru the same dilema ,,just in different degrees.
I have to drive 21 hours to vist my fathers place on the Island , expensive as it is ,,I would not trade the cash for the memories.

Thats me .

Everyone has to make thier own decision about how they would/ will not use a boat .

I see it as a personal choice about how important the money vs how important the memories are.

My memories are what Im worried about saving ,,not my cash...

I was just wondering if he was anywhere near Fort Peck. It looks like a good place to troll for walleye with cranks off planer boards. He'd get more use out of his boat that way. I've always wanted to give that a try.
