First turkey
I took out a young girl hunting this weekend as part of our local NWTF chapters effort to get new kids out turkey hunting. Saturday we had a great time hunting, just didn't get everything to work out quite right. Melissa got a couple of pictures of 4 jakes strutting on the other side of the fence (were we couldn't hunt) and had a great time watching them be silly birds. Went back out this morningto try again and had a nice longbeard land right in front of us but she couldn't get the shot when a small jake kept getting in the way. The big bird walked off leaving four jakes to hang out and play with us. She had picked out a jake the day before with a white beard and really wanted to shoot that one. Well he kept walking right with another bird and when they seperated she had a hard time getting aim on him. Finally it all came together and BAM bird goes running off I started calling and they all stopped, looked around and went what happened Second chance!! She got reloaded and found her bird again and at 30 yds BAM bird down.

Nothing better than watching a first time hunter running up to their first turkey I think she'll be smiling for the next week. Heres a picture of the two of us
Our chapter took out 3 young hunters this weekend. One of the others, Jacob, shot a nice bird with a 8" beard. They are getting pictures so I'll try to post one later. Haven't heard how the other girl did as of yet.

Thanks for sharing your time, knowledge, and skill with these young folks. You can be sure that they'll never forget this. Happy "thanksgiving" Melissa!

Re: First turkey
Good work Jeff! You don't realize how tiny of a girl she is until you sit next to her.
We worked our tails off in the Dalles chasing turkeys all weekend. 4300 acres of prime turkey hunting with four young guns and all of them saw plenty of birds. Two of them had toms within 10 yards, but learned that you CAN'T move. Fun none the less.

Re: First turkey
Nice job jjelkhorn, your daughter's smile is priceless - Kudos to you both
Lucky Guy - You might want to try bringing your daughter to next year's youth turkey clinic. It's a blast and lots of kids attend that have never hunted turkeys before. Also, the upcoming event found here: Announcing Youth Outdoor Day 2008 is designed to introduce "first timers" to lots of different aspects of the outdoor sports. Most of the major conservation organizations are represented there and the kids can look at what they like and skip the stuff they don't. Hope that helps -

Re: First turkey
Sweet!
I'm not that young, but I hope to be getting my first turkey this year. Thanks for taking the time and putting forth the effort to bring new and responsible (respecting private property) hunters into the sport.
