If you ask me everyone know's that G lomis and Lamiglass are top of the line for the money. Just a couple days ago I went out to pick up an extra steelhead pole. I came across a "Northriver" pole. I found out that they are a northwest made pole produced here just a few miles south of Portland. I asked a few questions about the pole and compared it to others I was looking at. They seem to have more backbone than the other steelhead poles but the person that sold me the pole said it had worked just fine for him two days before on the Wilson. Needless to say I feel I got a great deal for the money and I felt even better knowing that it was produced here in the northwest.

Hey VS, GI Joes is having a special on a Shimano steelhead setup which looks real nice for a starter rod and reel. The rod is 8 1/2 and has a Shimano bait caster reel, not sure what the model number is. They are selling for around $139 which is really good for a decent steelie setup. Also GI Joes is a sponsor of this site.

Hey rainrshine, a pole is something you put into the ground and supports electrical wires...it's fishing rod, not fishing pole....LOL!!

Good Luck VS

VS,

Assume you are a newbee and don't have alot of gear already.

Here are some options. Lamiglass and Loomis are very good top of line products.

Northriver and Berkley Buzz ramsey series are good rods for the price point ($80.00)

All available at Fishermans (+) or GI Joes (-)

Check out http://www.gofishin.com/?cart_id=334...0&main_cat=100

for some very good prices (really good) on some Lamiglass rods. S86MC 8.5 ft 8 - 12 lb has been a Northwest Steelhead rod for many years.
As for reels, Ambassedour or Shimano. Check out e-Bay. Some 5500, 5600 C4 on auction and some shimanos at again very good prices. Do you want left hand or right hand. The Abu C4 reels are a great product. For Steelhead, DO NOT be afrid of the older Shimano reels on e-bay 200's 100's 250's . If you can get a good condition for $20 bucks buy it.

Good luck, and remember that some point you will most likely end up with lots of rods and reels that will be used for diff purposes.

OR , you could be like Bait-O-Eggs and focus on the Zebco product line. He is especially partial to the reels with a closed face and the nice button on the back. (FB 8, BOE 7)

Good luck.

Fishbait, BOE actually purchased a old classic off e-bay to use for this steelhead season and it's not Zebco. The Ranco pocketfisherman. The drags are a little worn out and he could use some new drag washers. Anybody know where Bait can locate new washers? Last I heard he was going to make washers from the plastic coated cardboard used to store froozen foods.

The IM7 from Berkley is hard to beat. From what I was told, they are Loomis seconds, and for $79 who can go wrong? The Lamiglass rods are good too, as well as Loomis, they just cost more. The Berkley rod is a very stable buy.

The cheaper rods will work too, you just might be replacing them more often than fishing with them. North river and Shakespeare offer excellent line of better priced fising rods.

Put a 5500 Ambasadeur on a Berkley and you're fishing for under $150.Add some 12# green Maxima and you've got a pretty popular set-up  . Toss a 10# green max leader and a sharp hook below a small corky and shrimptail-- look out steelies

Chris
