Default Penn 209 reel

I went to a garage sale and picked up a dirty/grimy Penn 209 reel for 5 bucks.

After some elbow grease and scrubbing, it is now a very shiny clean and smooth reel. And I've been able to make out some of the markings on the reel:

Penn Peer No. 209
Made in USA
30-66 inscribed on the reel foot
29-209 inscribed on the spool
Oil 23-60 inscribed on the handle nut
Oil 40-60 inscribed on the spool adjustment nut (opposite the handle)

The reel comes with a rod clamp bracket with nuts and bolts.

I don't fish from boats, and so I don't know much about this reel. Is it a trolling reel? Mooching reel? Both?

Most importantly, was 5 bucks for the reel a good score?

Entry level Penn. Good for Salmon and bottom fish. Maybe $50 new. Should last you forever as long as you don't halibut or TUNA! fish with it.

The drag is pretty weak.

excellent. thanks for the info.

BTW The seller at the garage sale had okies strung up on his ceiling lights, like christmas ornaments. Must have had over 50+ or more strung up.

I asked if the okies were were sale. He said nope, since he needed them strung up to prevent him from knocking his head against the lights.

Doh!

Some charters use them for live bait tuna.
