2 new rifle reviews
went out shooting with a friend at his range. he had 2 new rifles he couldnt wait to shoot.
first up, savage 200 22-250
this gun shot suprisingly good for such an inexpensive rifle. he broke in the barrel while i dialed in my rifles. consistently shot sub 1" groups at 100 yards with remington factory ammo. i think the rifle is more accurate than he is. trigger wasnt too bad, could be better, but this seems to be a darn good shooter for $290.
next up remington 700 sps 17 rem fireball
after barrel break in..... i was dissappointed from the moment i picked it up. trigger was the best part of it, and it was ok at best. no matter what we did we could not get this gun to shoot under 1" at 100 yards. was not windy, just didnt shoot well. again remington factory ammo, which by the way he had to drive all over salem to get. still ended up special ordering 3 boxes. the chrono showed it shoots slower than my 17 remington so im not quite sure why this has replaced the 17 remington.
the same rifle in 223 seemed to have shot well, quite frankly heads and shoulders above this one a couple months ago.
he was quick to blame the wind, but i let him shoot my older 17 rem and it shot just fine. maybe a bad rifle or a friday gun, who knows?
overall i was very impressed with the savage, just might go out and buy one. as for the remington, maybe its the cartridge, but i was very dissappointed.....

Re: 2 new rifle reviews
I just bought a Savage 116 in .300 WM Man, I tell you what! I'm downright impressed with Savage. I love that Accutrigger, and first day at the range, I shot a 3 shot 1/2" group with the first handload I tried. I had been hearing for a couple of years that Savage was a good rifle and so wanted to try it for myself. I own several Ruger M77 that I like and have turned into shooters, but for out of the box performance I'd say it's hard to beat the Savage

Re: 2 new rifle reviews
I have several SPS models along with a BDL or 2. I have always replaced the synthetic stocks on the SPS models...regardless of caliber. I switched them all out to Hogue over-molded models with great improvement. Naturally, trigger work is always called for.
The reason I asked about 4 Corners in the earlier post was that I had a chance to shoot a 700 in your caliber out there. Being generally a lousy shot...did I say that out loud!...I had no problems getting it to shoot under 1". The guy was a fellow handloading fanatic, so he most likely went to the "nth" degree...as I do...to tailor the load to his specific gun.
Myself, I have stayed with the old fashion .22 calibers...223 & 22-250 etc. I was thinking about a 17 FB, but, maybe I will wait a while.
Might be the stock...might be the load...might be the cycle of the moon for all I know. However, the caliber, itself, has been getting some reasonable write-ups.
Best of luck
Gary
