Default Yaquina fish run?

I am seeing lots of lone fish returns on the yaquina (bridge up to oyster farm) today on the flood tide. I run this quite often and this is different today. Anyone know if a run of some type is happening?

What exactly do you mean by 'lone fish returns?'
The only thing I can think of might be herring finally starting to show up with these big tides.

Herring are usually a cloud/blob. These are your typical single fish arches, 10 to 20 feet deep. Steelhead? Screen cap of ff attached. Sorry to nerd out here - wireless internet in boat.

Perhaps sturgeon? I know a few charters target them in the river and estuary.

I would bet steelhead as an unlikely candidate. If they are in fact larger fish, I would guess either spring Chinook or sturgeon.

These don't seem like the sturgeon I've seen on the willy on sonar. These are in the upper half of depth usually and not as big. I figured chinook would be in the lower half too. These are decent sized. Hmmm... Lots out in front of sawyers, but slugs of them elsewhere.

Interesting, indeed! Are you conducting some experiments out there on the water?

There are lots of schools of the larger perch in the bay right now, or so I have heard. Not likely to be springers. Maybe sturgeon, but there are not that many fish in the bay at a given time.

Sea Lions under bait fish? Water loged timber afloat off the bottom? Is anyone else seeing this besides you? This is breaking news if its Salmon or Steelhead. Are the images big enough to be Orcas- OOOH Yea. They have been in the bay befor killing seals as told to me by some locals and every one in town went down to see the bay turn Red. PMs only if you find that they are Salmonoides-Me first

I wish.
They haven't been in they bay for several years as far as I can recall.

Doubtful those are Sturgeon, there just aren't that many of them in the Yaquina.
I like the perch idea, that makes some sense. Or.....your fish finder is just seeing a bunch of debris from the recent downpours...it happens.

Getting a little side-tracked here, but: I have lived in Newport the last three summers and orcas have come into Yaquina bay every summer I've been here.

I would roll a herring through there, then maybe a sandshrimp, then a herring rig, then maybe a whole sealion .

Only one way to find out!!

Or, borrow an underwater camera.

Well, I know this wasn't sea lions, debris, bait schools or diving birds. I have seen plenty of those over the years. Well, can't say I've seen a sea lion on sonar yet but I think I would know that. These are fish. I'm with uncle - have to try a herring.

Really? That's really pretty cool. I haven't personally seen it in several years and I hadn't heard that they'd been seen in the bay since then. Hope they come back this year too.
Yeah, sorry about side-tracking the thread.

The last orca was a few years back that I heard about.

The single marks if showing middle size fish are silvers or steelheads The larger ones are likly sturgeon or biger salmon in feeding. When we droped nets for lazieo to get hearing we would get salmon and steelhead that were in feeding. The way the timber company messed with the genitics of the fish it could be anyting.

It sucks that that hatchery closed in newport. I liked those fish
