Default Furuno FCV582L Question

I just picked up a used Furuno Fish finder. My boat was already set up for the same one from the previous owner. He took his with him when he sold the boat. I found a used one and hooked it up last week. I was trying it out this past weekend and trying to figure out the best settings for optium results. I only picked up a couple signals that looked like strong fish marks. I was fishing in 20' of water. Most of the time I had a red vertical line on the chart when it would mark a fish not an arch (I'm used to running Lowrance) Does the Furuno show arches like lowrance?

I was running the unit in manual mode. Gain around 6 played around different settings, Advance at 1/2, and the range in 2. I tried both 200 htz and 50 htz. When I turned on the A-Scope it seemed to mark fish. I have the 600KW Bronze through hull Transducer (Airmar) I also tried it in auto mode with out any better results.

Do you think it may be operator error (me) or could something be wrong with the unit?

Thanks, Finz

Furunos have a tough time in shallow water. They work awesome in the salt at greater depths. It is also nice to have their factory service center in Camas, WA. If I were you I would drop the unit off with them and they will check it out usually free of charge.

No cute arches or fishies.

You might try resetting to factory specs. You may have something set that is filtering too much. Link to manual below. Page 24 shows you how to reset it.

Thanks for the replys. I will try and do a reset today. If that doesn't make a difference I'll try taking it into Furuno.

Thanks, Dave

I did the Reset to factory settings last night and everything works perfect now. Fish showed up as round or oblong shapes in yellow with red center. Also picked up a nice #15 springer to boot.

Thanks, finz

1 suggestion I would make is putting the scroll speed at 1/1, realtime, I've used a number of ff over the years including the 582 for the past 12, 1/1 has always worked best for me.
