Default Crab tilla in Newport

I was thinking about the crab-tilla again. Maybe this Saturday in Newport. Or a crab boil at the very least. Tides are high early and low around midday. It's a pretty good ebb but the bar should be OK if there is a nice ocean. Lings are there for the taking and the crab are where you find them.

Anyone interested in a fishing trip and a little S. Beach parking lot cuisine>?

Im in, finally a weekend where the ocean might lay down enough to allow a shakedown cruise. How deep do you typically crab for the ocean? I have a few pots with about 50-75' on them. Might even bring down some fresh springer to BBQ!

It's gonna be nice Saturday. And instead of working in my garden, I'm going fishing.

We have some more fish to save from imprisonment in a marine reserve.

There was at one time on this website a floatilla. Basically an ifish boater gathering at a fishing spot. So this is a crab tilla ... Salty Dogs gathered at a spot to go crabbing.

We go out over the bar and turn on the vacancy sign on the crab motel and go bottom fishing. Then pull crab gear later on the way back in and have a pot luck/outdoor crab boil in South Beach.

Get your boat out of the driveway and go fishing on the coast.

I am headed down Thursday morning . Just worried about the big run out early. It should be ok Thursday noon or so. Also plan on fishing Friday. Already have some pots down there and if the weather looks doable on Saturday for my 19 foot Arima, I would really like to hang around and meet all of you.

Sounds like fun. I'm in. Bottom fishing is about the only fishing I'm really good at (I guess you can't really mess up bottom fishing).

What time?

Looks like I have a full boat. Woody, Puffin and Puffin's crew. I am arriving Newport Friday, spending the night on the boat at the transient dock and heading out at first light. The tide is high at about 0545 and max ebb at 0900, low slack around noon. I would be careful and give the bar a good look if you intend to cross after 0730. Usually the bar is ok even on an ebb but you never know. And of course the CG may close or restrict the bar and relieve you of the decision to cross it.

We may put out crab pots overnight Friday If I can get there early enough. I plan on fishing/crabbing until 1 or 2 on Saturday and doing a crab boil (if there are crabs) at 4 or so in the parking lot at S. Beach near the cleaning station.

I have crab cooking stuff. Also I will bring zenners red hots, corn and red taters. Bring whatever you got and we'll make a potluck.

I will be down early Friday morning. Got tied up with the four letter word today. (Work). I will be at C-49. Hope to get some pots in Friday night. Am only planning on a couple as that is all we have rigged up for deep water.

Will try to talk Mama Bear into some brownies for the pot luck.

Pilar...I just read a post from saltywalty and apparently the bar has been restricted the last couple of days. I don't want to make the trip without making it out. What's your best guess...worth the trip? (21' boat)

Im going to try and get out on Saturday and will look for you guys. For me it may be more of an afternoon thing (putting in at about 11 or so). My boat is a bit much for my little truck and my boat/fishing partner has other plans so my getting out depends on talking another friend into towing it out for me.

Alternatively, if someone has an open seat Im happy to crew - send me a PM.

I was affraid of the same thing, so I didn't go this morning... AND the bar was unrestricted figures

Tomorrows tide exchange isn't as bad as the last 2 days, so I'd bet it'll be unrestricted again. You can call the CG and check

Here's the info I used to decide whether to do this or not. Last Monday the Wetsand forecast showed a lull on Saturday. At first the Thur/Fri showed a little blip and so did early next week. But the location of the lull never really moved off Saturday. The other thing is the easterly wind. Out of the NE it is a calming pattern. If there is alot of south in it, look out.

The previous weekend the forecasts leading up to that were all over the place.

And for once actual, Wetsand and NOAA agree. The bridge cam is looking pretty good too.

Well we had an awesome day fishing, caught a few black rock fish and our limits of ling. We also had two full pots of FEMALE crab (not one male). We kept an eye out for ifish stickers and a gathering at the fish cleaning station but we must have missed it. We were gone by 3:30pm. Great day on the water and by the amount of boats I saw out there, seems as if many of us enjoyed it. Thanks Pilar for the info you provided.

Thanks to John and the crew on Kismet and to Arima Grizzley and mama bear for sharing their wonderful food. We drove home to the valley with full bellies.

I got a late start and didnt do the best job getting my crew into fish before the winds kicked up from the south stirring things up. Had some motor problems and decided to head in without limits.

Time to rebuild the starter (or maybe time for the repower I was hoping to put off until next year).

259 .. sorry we missed you. We set up about 3:30 and started boiling crab and cleaning fish.

S. Beach by the ramp cleaning station?

Anyway good times. We got a couple of limits of crabs, 3 lings and 24 rockfish. I think the wind finally settled on SW. There were alot more rockfish and only a few lings this time. Thanks for the company Saturday, Jon, Tom and Don. And thanks for the brownies Arima Grizzly. Good to see Tippet and crew. Guess we'll plan the next well in advance so the weather can cancel it for us.

Is anyone else ready for Halibut?

My new (to me) boat gets here Sunday, a couple of weeks early. Will have to work at getting it ready in time for the opener. The Arima ran great the last two weekends so it is still an option on a good day. Just have to decide on starting to move electronics, kicker etc. on to the new boat or trying to sell it as is for a little longer.

Maybe I have it wrong...Is South Beach the old launch? I was looking for people at the new cleaning station.

Deanrt...Good to meet you also. Dont worry about the ramp thing...we've all had those days
