Planned for about a month, the day finally arrived and David Johnson and his father (both outstanding individuals!) set out with myself to test the wily Rogue River steelhead. Our minds were filled with verified reports of 15+ fish/boat days from just last week, and the only real question to be answered was "could these legendary fish outsmart David Johnson?" who had never fished the middle Rogue before. Answer: Not hardly!
The only thought in my mind was to constantly remind myself "keep your mouth shut and you might learn something". As it worked out, I did. I have never fished with anyone who pays as much attention to details as David. It's no mystery to me why he is as successful as he is.
He is also a genuinely great guy! (He got it from his dad!) That is a winning combination.
We didn't have one of those legendary 15 fish days, but we did manage to hook up five and land four on a day when that part of the river was a little slow. I had a great time...even though we got pelted with rain for the last hour or so.
What did I learn? Hahaha...I'll never tell...well maybe one thing...it's best to put your rain gear on BEFORE it starts raining. We said farewell, and off they went to pursue more fish north and west of Grants Pass. Better look out wily steelhead!
