Default Silvers on the fly?

I'm going to be on the Central Oregon coast in late August, and would like a shot at Coho on the fly. I know the Silver start up the Umpqua in mid-Aug., any other rivers a possibility? Not asking for your favorite spot or anything, just generally! PM if you like , Thanks in advance

Hey There
I think Aug will be a little bit early for Silvers, unless you're in the ocean. Seriously, you can definitely get them out there on the fly.

If you want to get them in freshwater, your best chance is probably some of the coastal lakes. Siltcoos or Tahkenitch in Oct or Nov.

Let me know if you need any details.

I have a feeling they may be shutting down the coastal silver fishery this year. We'll know more after this week.

Sorry for the delay in thanking you for the responses--just got back from my last(sigh!) steelhead trip of the spring. I assume that the Siltcoos and Tahkenitch sp? are ocean run fish--not landlocked? I heard about the ocean closure possibility, but isn't that supposed to improve the chances of river opportunities? Just a landlocked spud spey guy here--what do I know?

They're projecting significantly lower Coho runs this year, and coupled with the scary low Chinook runs (everywhere but the Columbia), I wouldn't be surprised to see a majority of the coast and it's river systems shut down late Summer. Even if there was a high coho return in the works, I'd bet they'd still shut down because of the potential impact with Chinook bycatch. It's still up in the air, but with the Feds getting involved and governors beginning to demand federal aid, I'm going to bet on drastic measures.

I don't think so Carp. I'm a lot closer to these areas and listen closely for rumors. The fisheries in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch will go on this fall.

Well, I wasn't basing observations on rumor:

http://www.koin.com/news/local/story...d-065864426b5e

http://www.pcouncil.org/newsreleases...L_PressRel.pdf

They announced yesterday that they're all but shutting down the fisheries South of Cape Falcon, and catch quotas North of Cape Falcon will be 20% of normal.

I don't pretend to know what that will mean for specific tributaries, but it's definitely more than "just a rumor"

Siltcoos and Tahkenitch will still be open for silvers this year. Anyone saying anything different is starting a "rumor" at this point.

I think the closures are on the ocean to protect the Sacramento-bound fish. Once the fish enter Oregon rivers they should be available for catching.
