Looking for Fishing Partners
I am in search of some folks that can teach me to fish for sturgeon. I have a 21'6" North River sled, tons of fishing gear (mostly fly fishing stuff). I have purchased rods, reels, hooks, leaders, etc...
Have boat need someone to help me or to go along.
I am a die -hard fly fisherman, but I want to learn more about sturgeon ' Salmon fishing in the rivers in the Willamette, Columbia, and coastal bays.
I grew up in Coos Bay fishing both rivers and salt, but it has been many years. I've been fishing Oregon for over 40 yrs...just back from Iraq (2nd tour) and have a new toy - the boat.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
I'm probably not the best one to reply as I don't get many keepers. I usually fish for sturgeon in may- july. I get shad around the Bonneville area and go for the oversized. Great fun, and the extra shad are great halibut bait. Your best bet is probably going on the Ifish general fishing community, this site is predominantly salt. Good luck and welcome home from Iraq. Enjoy the new toy.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Welcome aboard, and thank you for your service in Iraq as well!! I'd be happy to meet up with ya and swap some stories. I am in Alsea also (the hatchery) and my girlfriend is the night cook at Debs Kountry Kitchen in town. I'm usually in there on Sat. nights (prime rib), but could head in just about anytime for coffee and fish stories.
I could definately get you some holes/directions for sturg up around St Helens if you are in to fishing for them up there... don't have any experience chasing them in Yaquina (YET!)

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Well, I fished for sturgeons off the bank most of the time. But also do well when I'm on my friend's boat. Knowledgeable about gears. If you want to fish the Big C or the Willy, I might be able to help.

Hi My name is Peter Gall
I have fished the Columbia & Willamette for Sturgen and the Bay area for years for them. Always catch fish. I have my own boat also,, but have trouble getting folks to go. I have fished several places around the wourld and my favorite is Tuna then Salmon on the Ocean.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Thank you very much for your service to our country. Most people on this site will want to know something more about your experience before going offshore. I have recently sold my boat, and have some offshore experience, alot of local river experience. I don't get the time to fish as much as I would like. That is part of the reason I no longer own a boat. You will find much help on this site. It doesn't appear we live to close together...if you are ever heading up this way, send me a pm, I will assist in any way I can. Thanks again.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Check the thread pinned to the top about fishing trips for returning troops.
You'd be welcome to come with me for a Spring Chinook trip.
I don't fish for "sucker fish" though
Thanks for your service. Enjoy your time on the water.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
I also grew up in the Coos Bay area, Coquille actually.
I moved up here about 15 years ago and sturgeon fishing is our passion. We half heartedly fish for salmon, mainly just killing time between sturgeon trips.
We are out just about every weekend, you're welcome to tag along as long as you don't mind watching my wife catch all of the fish (I'm just there to put them in the boat and clean the catch).
Next month we'll be off to Astoria, once you get that dialed in you'll be hooked for good (think big, fat, fresh, fiesty fish in 20' deep or less water).
Shoot me an email or Pm and I'll give you my phone number. I'd be happy to fill you in on what we've learned.
Scott

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Thank you for your service and sacrifice, twice.
Oregon City has Sturg, Salmon, and Steelhead. Your sled or my drifter, anytime.
Bring Twitch and I will learn to toss a fly, for feisty Summers in the Clack.
We've got a lot of free seats to fill for returning troops, please tell your buddies.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Thank you for your service. I served in the Marines and went to Iraq for two tours as well so I know it feels great to be home.
By no means am I an expert if fishing for sturgeon but I am willing to show you what I have learned so far, and it seams to be working. You made the right first step by getting on Ifish. I have learned more on this web site then I can describe.
Once again, welcome home!

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Awesome:
Are you in the 1st house next to the trap? My son and daughter have graduated from Alsea High School as well. My number is: 487-4238 call me anytime. I work in Salem at the main post office. I live in the 2nd house on the left on South Fork rd. Swing by anytime. I am currently at work today (Sunday the 6th at 11:45AM).
We can fish anywhere as far as I am concerned. I also have a drift boat for the Alsea as well.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
I am a Jarhead as well 75-82 in the corps. Boy does a few tours in Iraq take hunting to a new level. Well, as long as the deer don't shoot back I'll be just fine.
I am game...my days off are Thurs-Fridays...does this work for you?

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
We can get together if you like. I think my phone number (541-487-4238) is on a reply to a fellow Alsea guy that lives at the steelhead hatchery on the North Fork.
I am headed for Coos bay today after work for some crabbing-clamming, then going to spend some time with my dad for awhile. I'll post my trip.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
We've got some guys in the chapter that are into them. Come on down and meet up with them this Wednesday night, 7 pm at Central Lincoln PUD.
I haven't fishined for them or catfish since I moved away from the delta but sure would like to.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
you would probably have better luck on the main board if you want to go after Sturgeon. Best Sturgeon fishing is on the Columbia, not really so much the ocean.
Good luck on your quest, Sturgeon fishing is actually quite a bit of fun.

You need to leave Larry home and you'll do much better!
He has some sort of stink about him, I'm sure that's the reason he can't catch fish.
Or maybe get a bigger boat and let him sit on the bow.
Tell him he's still number one in my book, and yes I was thinking that finger.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
If you want to come up to the lower CR in May or early June, I show you how to catch a 5 ft sturgeon in 4 ft of water............ Great fun on light gear.

Re: Looking for Fishing Partners
Have you ever tryed in the yaquina? I see that you are from Alsea, so that is not very far to go. It have been a few years sence I have been , but it is a lot of fun. I have got then too big and too small I have yet to get one just right. I would be more than happy to let you know some of the spots. I work full time + so getting time to go out right now might be hard. PM me if you would like more information.
