Hound Dog ?????
I have been thinking about getting a couple of hounds to chase Bobcats. This is something I have always been interested in and need a little advice.
I have heard Beagles are a decent dog to use as well as Walker hounds.
Any good breeders in the area with proven dogs?

Re: Hound Dog ?????
Paul,
Hounds are a full time job...Not much time for other stuff...
I hunted walkers for 20+ years...If I was going to start over,(which I'm not)...I would spend the money on a good cat dog...You will have a lot to learn and you will need a dog to teach you...I haven't kept up on the price of a good cat dog,but they were plenty back when I hunted...I bet they still are...
In my opinion,no young dogs...You won't have much fun trying to figure out what is going on...You will need a good broke dog to help you out...
As for beagles, Not enough leg..

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. If I do buy, it will be Walkers then.

Re: Hound Dog ?????
Being on a hunt with good dogs, watching them work - whether for Cats or Bear - is such a good time. I toyed with the idea of having a couple of hounds when I was young but it does take up a LOT of time.
Oh, and good dogs are spendy!!!

Re: Hound Dog ?????
I have to agree. I hunted hounds for many years and guided bear and cat hunts. A good dog that will strike and cold trail is what you need and youl pay out the @$$ for one. I would start with one good seasoned dog and buy it under a tree by it self. The I would look into getting one or 2 more started dogs that were not trashy. You don't want to run yodel dogs all night. Invest in some tracking gear and a god shock collar. These dogs need year round attention and you can't just put them away until next season, they need exercise etc. Don't get into a rush to get a bunch of dogs, you'll only end up with a big gas bill and a huge head ache in the end. Walkers are a great dog and you need something that can run all day or night. A chubby dog is not going to do it. Beware when buying a dog from someone. Make sure the dog looks like it's in good shape and healthy. I got burned by dog jockys and most hound hunters can sell a dead horse. A god dog will be in the $2500 to $5000 range. It's not somehting you get into over night and expect to catch game. It took me about 4 years to put together a good pack and if you have a bunch of portch pissers don't expect anyone to want to hunt with you.
Good luck, I miss it and loved every minute of it but it is a huge responsibility. Be a good stuart to the sport and practice good ethics or your wasting your money because the bunny huggers will shut you down.
Happy Hunting,
Jeff

Re: Hound Dog ?????
Yeah them were the good ol' days. Walkers #1.... Black & Tans #2....throw in a plot & a blue tick ya got a pack. I will say this though...IT IS FULL TIME & if you have never owned a hound...be it beagle, basset, blood, dachund, or walker THEY ARE HARD HEADED.

Re: Hound Dog ?????
Thanks for the input. I have done some research and know the dedication that it takes. I am toying with the idea, because I may be moving back to my rural property and I have a 12 year old stepson that would be interested in this and there is timber property literally in my back yard.
I wouldn't be thinking of this if I were to stay in town.

There's an understatement I ran hounds myself all through my teens and 20's I do miss it sometimes, but kinda like the piece and quiet.Nothing quite like having 5 hounds in the back yard all try'n to see who can bawl the loudest, nieghbors cats always know how far the chain can reach.
I ran em all at one time or another black&tan, walkers, blueticks, plotts, redbones, and some mixs of these.I always liked a good plott hound though, the standard is a wee smaller than the long legged walkers and b&t's,and they tend to have a more chop bark than a bawl, but plotts can be pretty agressive, this isn't always a bad thing in a hound though.
I've thought about getting into it again, but all it takes is to listen to the nieghbor down the streets black and tan bawling everytime the wind blows to talk me out of it.

By all means do IT for the kid!!! Make sure that he reads "Where the Red Fern Grows" & "Summer of the Monkeys" by Wilson Rawls first! They can be found in any school library. NOT THE MOVIES....WtRFG was the #2 childrens' book for years....I used to get kids about his age to read them with this bet: I'll buy you your own copy if you like it and I'll eat it if you don't. SURE BOUGHT A LOT OF COPIES OVER MY 28 YEARS OF TEACHING!!! I NEVER HAD TO EAT EVEN ONE COPY!

That was my favorite movie when I was a kid, and I was thinking of trying to find it again.

Re: Hound Dog ?????
I have it on VHS. I would send it to you if you would copy it onto a DVD for me.
