The classic Ruger 10-22. Great fun out of the box and a lifetimes worth of available modifications to keep you happy in the future.

Before this question can be answered, how old are you, and how much experience do you have?

10-22 may be a fun gun with a lot of add on options, but definately not a gun I would recommend for a starter. You pull the trigger and the second round is ready to go, not a good combo for a starting shooter.

Wow, this post reminded me of my first .22 purchase – about 35 years ago when I too stood knee high to a sage rat. My first 22 was a Browning lever action. That was the prettiest gun I have ever owned. I wish I never would have sold it.

Anyway, if I were to buy another .22 I would probably buy the stainless Ruger 10/22. Personally, I don’t buy anymore blued guns. They just don’t hold up well for me.

Good luck and whatever you do, keep your first .22 and pass it down to your son someday.

I wouldn't spend the extra for stainless. All you need from the original gun is the action. Just get the cheapest one you can find, then an aftermarket stock and barrel. A trigger kit is also required for best results. I built one from Midway, unfinished thumbhole stock and stainless bull barrel, about $120 a couple years ago. It shot 1/2" groups at 50 yds. You will also need a base, rings, and a scope. The scope doesn't have to be top-notch, there's no recoil, and it's not a critical application. Some guys claim to have good luck with stock rifles, but I've never seen one that shot well out of the box. The other option is to get a target model. Some of the factory barrels are very good, some only so-so. I have a blued target model with a Hogue stock that shoots under an inch at 100 yds after 50,000 rounds, but it is an exceptional gun. Dad's stainless target gun is only good for 2". You may have to spend $400 for a complete set-up, but you will be much happier with it compared to a stock gun.

you cant go wrong with a 10/22 and as jokester said Marlin mod 60's are great little guns. Also you might want to just look into getting a good bb or pellet gun to start rp

They are WAY more cheaper to buy, and pretty accurate to. But the stock always breaks at the pistolgrip! I have 3 of them and Two are broken there, and the other is cracked. all in the same place. If I had a synthetic stock for one I would also say that was a good option

Ruger 10/22. The Marlins are good and cheap but if you like plinking 25 round "clips" are the way to go.

I don't think you can legally shoot grouse with a .22 anymore but the regs change on that from time to time. Good luck and have fun

A quick look at the net's auction site for reference;;these are ones I like(I learned with the Remington 341 bolt tube feed and it's still accurate even though it was made in the 1930's!)
Rem 341 $175 Prices are approx.
Rem 513 Matchmaster$375
Rem 510 single shot$100
Rem 504$375 NEW
Mossberg 144 magazine target bolt
Savage Cub$24
Marlin 81 tube feed bolt $150
CZ 452 Varmit $375
Marlin carbon fiber stock bolt $250?
Savage MKII Hvy BBL w/ Accutrigger $???
I like the Rem 513 the best Hvy BBL and Target accuracy
great peep sites probably 6 shot spendy but an heirloom 22LR
Gunboker in Tigard has an excellent selection(22LRs) to look at usually
Good Luck

I became a good shot with my Marlin Model 81 S-L-LR Bolt, and to get good larger caliber practices, its not a bad way to go. That said nothing is more fun to me than plinking around with my Ruger 10/22 ss with a red dot scope on it

Still have the Marlin too! I think its around 25 years older than I am, and still shoots perfect. My friend and I used to shoot candles out at around 75 yards with it. (not the 1st time, most of the time, but we got pretty darn good/close every time )

Put me in the camp with BOE. SAFETY is the first consideration for all firearms. While you learn to handle the gun it is probably best to have a model that keeps you and others around you safe. I am not suggesting that you are unsafe now. What I am suggesting is that there is a learning curve that goes with being safe. The way this applies is that when you take your new gun out for plinking or whatever you are probably a bit excited and are enjoying your new gun...as well you should. In that state of mind you may be distracted by something, or someone and have a brief lapse in the saftey aspect of handling the rifle. With a bolt, lever, or pump, you have to make a conscious decision to chamber another round. Idealy you would make a habit of doing this ONLY before you make your next shot. With a semi-auto you are placed in shooting mode immediately and have fired the last round and then have to make a conscious decision to safe the rifle and then depend on the saftey to insure that there is not an accidental discharge.

A couple of other thoughts. If you are just plinking and such, do you NEED the rapid fire capability of a semi-auto? The other is that if you purchase a good quality bolt, lever, or pump and take care of it you will be hard pressed to lose much money on it if you decide you really want a semi-auto. IMHO

Fun shopping eh Seansquatch! I'd get the rifle that most contributes to what kind of shooter you want to be. If you want to become a successful big game or varmit hunter, I think you'll find most of the good ones stick with bolt action rifles. I have owned many .22s, but my favorite by far is my Ruger 77-22, because it best approximates the big game rifles I really care about shooting well. The bolt .22 is the most reliable, encourages discipline is shot selection, and every shot fired can contribute to making you and a future deer rifle a deadly combination. If you are going to become a lever action guy, go for the Marlin 39A -- it matches up well with some great lever guns if you are going to hunt the west side or Southeast Alaska and want to tote a classic brush gun.

I have a CZ 452 American and I love it. Its a bolt action with higher quality wood and metal finish than most other 22s in the under $500 range. The rifle is closer to the size of a regular hunting rifle, so it makes for great practice. Mine is a 17 HMR, but it is offered in 22.

My parents dont hunt or own any guns i have a nice 22.cal pellet gun but i want to move up to a rifle and accuracy is important for me and i want to get good at vermin hunting so i think im going with something bolt action semi-auto guns are cool but i think i will be a better shooter with a bolt action gun. Im also 6,7 and 258lb so i want a heavier gun some were around 6-8 pounds. Ive been looking at the Remington five a lot it looks like a nice gun but its kinda expensive any recommendations for a nice super accurate bolt action 22. I want to eventually hunt big game but im not going to get my big game rifle till im 18 im extremely safe with my pellet gun ive had it for over a year no accident at all but its just not accurate enough for me. Ive kinda been thinking about getting a 17hmr but the price of ammo is discourageing me.

Ruger does have a fan base with the 10/22, though I find them a pain in the back side when you only want to take 1 or 2 shots at something. You have to pull the clip and get the shell out of the chamber, reload the loose shell in the clip, reinsert the clip..... If you want to burn a clip full of ammo, not many guns are faster.

I like the look of the model 94 as mentioned by RustySocket, but on the winchester the lever and trigger guard travel and the trigger stays put. Easy to get the finger pinched between trigger and the guard. Plus the lever is a full 90 degree stroke. The browning model 94, the trigger travels with the lever so no finger pinching, and its about a 30 degree lever. You can leave your thumb on top of the stock and work the lever with finger tips only. Makes it really fast to reload if you want to.

I like the lever guns and would look at the browning blr.

Nothing wrong with a bolt either.

Google CZ and take a look at what they have. Those are fine rifles and very accurate. I'm not sure if you can find one for under $300, but I've seen them for $320.

10/22 Mine is on its 5th phase..............It has the most aftermarket stuff available. The only thing stock on mine is the receiver and the bolt.

My first .22 was a Glenfield Model 25. I still have it and its a sweetheart to shoot. It shoots dang near as good as my 10/22 when I had the Clark barrel on it. That thing has killed lots of sage rats, among other critters.

Also check out the new Savage MKII FVT or the FV with the Accu-trigger.

You might try to look into the youth programs at gun ranges, CMP sells the Savage FVT for $212 to the ranges but maybe if you joined you could purchase your own rifle. Worth a Google; Oregon youth state programs are fun and your dad could also 'be' into it.

if you want to become a good shooter id get a single shot. you will make your first shot count because its only a single shot. i got my first rifle from my grandpa, rem 510a single shot its a nail pounder been in the fam for many yrs and hopefully many more to come. i also have a ruger 77-22 very good shooter also, plus you wont burn as many rounds with a bolt action. autos are fun but burn way to many rounds with them and im not as accurate with them cuz i seem to just get close enough then start blasting.

My first 22 rifle was a 10/22 blued and I sold it to move up to a Browning BLR-22. The trigger moves with the racking, so no pinched fingers. Much safer IMO, and will never be banned. My third 22 was a very accuate Browning ABolt that I'm sorry I sold to fund a Benelli SBE, but was replaced with my grandfather's BA-22 Browning Auto. Now that's a nice gun, but probably out of your price range. And then I came full circle and got the Ruger 10/22 stainless target. Heavy, but with a trigger job and a thumbhole stock, oh so sweet. If I had to do it all over again, and only had one 22 rifle, it would be the Browning Lever. Not the most accurate of the bunch, but it has infinitely more character than the common 10/22. If you have no need for nostalgia, go with the 10/22 for all the options from heavy barreled race gun to a combat space gun. Have fun, be safe.

Joe's has Ruger 10-22's (blue/wood) on sale for $179, comes with a tasco 3x9 scope to boot!
That was my first rifle and the start of a life time of shooting.

My current 10/22 is stainless ($169 w/scope, used).

I got my CZ 452 on Gunbroker for $280. I didn't realize it until I won the auction, but the seller was a shop within 10 miles of my house. I didn't even have to pay shipping! Either way, its a very nice rifle for almost half the price of a Ruger 77/22.

If you chose to put a scope on the rifle, get a scope meant for rimfire rifles because the parallax will be set for closer ranges, 50 yards I believe. Regular rifle scopes have their parallax set at 100 yards, which leaves closer shots fuzzy. These scopes can be fairly inexpensive, often less than $50. You do get what you pay for, but for beginning purposes, they are fine. I would recommend using open sights first, but it seems like fewer and fewer rifles come with them anymore.
