How do you cure a stroke shaver? Golfing anyone!

I think the un-official use for a sand wedge is the same as the first step in addressing this issue.
Keep your eye on his ball() and swing like you mean it.

Step 2 if needed requires a driver and a short speech.

It's for their own good!

There are 12 of us who play together regularly we have survived playing with each other for many years doing these things;

If he is just careless and a good friend, constant gentle reminders..."No you had a six..."

If he is intentional and he is a good friend, unrelenting constant abuse until he stops shaving strokes..."No you had a six , just like the last 2 doubles you had on the 2 holes before and by the way that lost ball on 18 last week should cost you another stroke this week...how about we just let "name a friend" keep your score since you can't seem to count above 3 -4-5...and yes I will now have a beer from the beer cart!"

If he is intentional and not a friend...well why are you playing with him? Suggest he run for political office. I hear Bill Clinton was a closely shaved par golfer.

We used to golf with a guy that was a heavy shaver but he was also a good friend so we would just laugh it off and keep his stroke count on a separate sheet that we would score. Unless your playing for money or some kind of trophy whats the harm, some guys just cant stand to loose no matter what it takes

Remember golf is one of the only sports where you can penalize yourself. Like others have said, if he's your friend then there shouldn't be any problems letting him know. Maybe he doesn't know how to keep score and is unintentionally writing down the wrong score, tons of people don't know the rules and just guess.

Keep two scores for a round adn then explain that the lower score is by using his "method"...

Good idea you've got to watch those shavers like a hawk. Or you can get yourself a stroke monkey to follow the offender around and keep track for you. I think you can pick one up at your local pet shop.

I am lame at golf but sometimes bissness forces me into it. I found that if I tee up every shot except the putt I am not half bad - Its stroke shaving taken to the next level

Just thought of something else, whenever me and my buddies golf, we usually announce what we get once the ball is in the hole, i.e "Par". "Double" and the ocassional "Birdie!!!", etc...Get him to tell you his score when he goes to grab the ball and he wont have time to think up a stroke count, or just keep announcing what you get after you hole out when he tells you he got the same or beat you, say "really thats funny cause i played that hole down the middle and i think i saw you off on the other fairway".

by the way what are we talking here, is he claiming an 80 and shotting 100???

Don't let it bother you. He's only cheating himself. On the other hand, make him buy a round for each stroke shaved .

What are you playing for? Money or fun. If its just fun ignore it you all know what his real score is. I play with a couple of guys like that and have a great time playing with them anyway, my score is all that really matters to me. If its money then call him on it, be nice but just question the score as mentioned in another post, after 1 or 2 times their memory will get better.

I have a buddy that hits my driver, my 7 wood and my wedge when ever we play(3 or 4 times a year). His clubs are old and I don’t mind as we play pretty close together tee to green, he can beat me by 4 or 5 strokes over 18 holes 50% of the time this way and takes great pleasure in doing so. I don’t have the heart to remind him it is a 2 stroke penalty each time he hit’s a club out of my bag, we play for fun and I enjoy his company, my ego can take it.

Make sure that he posts the scores that he claiming. Then play handicap vs handicap.

Get a money round going and always have him score first. Then shave your scores accordingly. He'll get it quick.

No no no, when playing in the NW, when lift clean and place is effect, always carry around green life savers. You can get a nice clean lie and nobody will ever know!

does it matter? are you playing for doe, lunch, nothing - tell us more.. is it shooting 100+ and calling it 90, or not calling penalties.

Easy ways to solve it,, me and my gang don't have issue with getting it right, we play for $ or beers at the hut (and that is serious stuff!). while we hole out and it is to the wire you have to state your score. and if somebody needs help counting they get it then and there.

You have to state the rule from the 1st tee, topping yes is a stroke, 1 muligans,, or none whatever, lost balls is 1 plus shooting from original spot etc... and define when/if you can pick and clean in winter.

Hey, Thanks for the replies! We play for fun but it is serious to a point. Even though he shaves we still love him. If and when we play for money he will be called. About the stepping on the ball thing..........he stepped on my ball the other day LOL. I have had him and another guy step on my ball when the playing gets tough and Im on the green before them. Jealousy is the biggest compliment when playing among friends

Bring your son or nephew or borrow a neighbor kid if you have to. Tell your buddy you're bringing the kid along to teach the young lad the rules of golf! Next thing your buddy knows, little Johnny is following him around the course clicking away! I would pay to see this!
