Default Longbeach Razors

Who is going to be digging Razors next week. Last I heard the North Oregon beaches are closed due to red tide. Washington has a razor season starting on the 13th.

I plan to take the wife and kids to Longbeach and get a room for a couple days of digging starting on the 13th. I went up about a month ago and had my limit in like 15 to 20 minutes and wasnt even close to the surf.

I wish you could keep more than 15 clams. :depressed:

I'd really like to dig the razors this month. I wonder though, how is it that the Oregon beaches at Seaside and Gearhart have the demoic acid alert, but the Long Beach clams are ok. They are only about 10 miles from each other aren't they?

They really have not confirmed that they will open the next season yet, have they? I keep checking back, but the report has not changed. I really hope it opens, I missed the first one. I will be there is they do.

BOE- I hope to get out as well. Depends on those wood "wrong" projects for christmas are going. Do you use a clam gun or shovel? I use both at times. Do the wife and kids go out too? When I take my kids they are pretty happy because they like the adventure and love the chowder.

I'm in. I think Bugleman, Mr. Fisherman and a few others too.

How far in advance of the open days do they test clams for red tide and demoic acid? Anyone know about that?

Last time we went the shows were huge and 2 scoops with a clam gun usually did the trick.

Tasty, tasty, tasty! We are headed down on the 30th through the 2nd and celebrating New Year, and of course a Duck victory in the Fiesta Bowl!!!
Should be an excellent time, with my family of five(girl 8,boys 11&13). We stay at the Oceanside right in Long Beach, but usually head north to clam. Kids love it!
Hey BOE, I'm headed there with Trusty, his family, and some other familiar Tillamook cronies who I know you are familiar with. Any chance you'll be there for those tides?
GO DUCKS!!!!!!!!!! Wish I could be in Tempe, but there's RAZORS TO FRY!!!!!

I would like to go as well. I am a rookie and have never done it before, so if an experienced digger from the portland area needs a partner to hold the lantern, I will drive!

Any one get a little sick after that last dig? We experienced a few symptoms the day after. I know the domonic acid levels were below action levels but there was some detected. No alarms here just currious if anyone experience some "symptoms". My clams were well taken care of and cooked enough to eliminate pathogens. I think

I am thinking of going on Friday night and have never been to the area. Could anyone supply me with some pointers like the tide correction, I have the Aberdeen tide, what correction should I use? Also how does one get to the digging area? It is straight across the 101 bridge? I am an experienced Gaper digger but I know there are differences in harvest method (probably speed).

Help would be appreciated!

The WDFW web site will answer all your clam questions. Dig and any open beach and your limit is assured in 1/2 hr.

Good luck

Bugleman I saw some of those Long Beach Long necks you consumed and even joined you. The proper use of a church key works wonders and I can report that there were no such issues at our lil get together.

Johnboy, I'm in and I believe you can count Drifty in too.

Longnecks.... Rack them up!

Looks like we are going to have a good turn out.

I copied the tides from the interactive tide chart on the front page for the mouth of the Columbia. It isnt that far to either Gearhart or Longbeach so the tide shouldnt be much different than what is shown.

Tides for Columbia River entrance (N. Jetty) starting with December 13, 2001.

Th 13 Low 5:48 PM -0.9
F 14 Low 6:32 PM -1.0
Sa 15 Low 7:14 PM -0.9
Su 16 Low 7:54 PM -0.7

I am happy to see Oregon has opened the beaches up for razor digging. I hope to dig my 15 clams in Oregon and run to Washington and dig my 15 clams on the same low tide. Does anybody know if this is illegal???? I am sure when I am at the second beach the gamie wont even question why I have 2 limits in the truck as I leave.

Bugleman - no negative symptons last time.

Wildhawg - if I make it during your later trip, maybe we can get together for a
"hello".

Will be heading up for the big dig on thursday and friday be staying in Ocean Park. My parents have a house on 199th I will be staying at any of you guys going to be in that general area. Maybe I can hook up with some of you other more experienced diggers who can help out a not so experienced digger. Might even have a place a few soles can hang out before the dig time approaches.

Bugleman,

A Church Key is a miraculas instrument of pure shiney satisfaction. It has many uses and can be credited with bringing congragations together for fine fellowship services. They have been known to catch fish, repair cars and change perspectives of otherwise downtrodden common folk.

I'll tell you more and perhaps demonstrate how one works at the beach

Fishinfool, email me at jeeperusa1@netscape.net Maybe you could come along with us.

Drifty and I will be beta testing a new invention, the CLAMROD! This one has potiential folks. I'll post a full report after we return.

This is gonna be fun!

Mr. F.

So has anyone heard if they will open this next season or not? The Washington fish and wildlife site has not changed since Oct. 11. Maybe tomorrow, I hope.

Yes MR. I understand now! I was such a spoiled child not to realize we used the church key on the last clamming trip. Oh what fun.

And cutter... One of the WDFW clam announcements mentions that they reserved more than usual the porportion of clams for the Spring season. Ubundance was high this year so we get to dig massive numbers of clams winter and spring.

I will be there, planning on hitting it Thursday, at the very least. It's been about 12 years since I last dug, and that was at west port. Any suggestions on where to go at Long Beach?

The go ahead was just posted on the WDFW web site. I will be out with my Dad and buddy Fred at either Copalis or Mocrocks on Thursday.Coastal razor clam dig cleared to start Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001)

OLYMPIA – Clam diggers got the green light today to start harvesting razor clams on designated ocean beaches at noon Thursday (Dec. 13) after an analysis of test results showed the clams are safe to eat.

Digging will be allowed from noon until midnight Dec. 13-15 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks beaches. Kalaloch will open for one day only on Dec. 15, due to a high abundance of small clams, said Dan Ayres, shellfish biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

"Marine toxin levels at all beaches remain low, allowing the third round of openings of the fall season to proceed on schedule," said Ayres, who recommends that clammers start digging about an hour before low tide for best results.

This week's digging schedule, along with afternoon or evening low tides, is as follows:

December 13 (5:27 p.m. -0.6) Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
December 14 (6:13 p.m. -0.7) Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
December 15 (6:56 p.m. -0.7) Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks, Kalaloch
Ayres noted that a another round of razor clam openings are tentatively scheduled to begin in late December, but that final word on those openings will not be available until another round of marine toxin tests is completed later in the month. Those tentative openings are currently scheduled Dec. 30-Jan. 1 from noon to midnight.

WDFW hopes to announce additional openings in 2002, once the agency has an opportunity to assess the results of digging in 2001.

Ayres reminds prospective clam diggers that they must have a valid shellfish/seaweed license, combination license or two-day license to harvest shellfish. For licensing information, see the WDFW Fishing in Washington pamphlet, which is available online.

Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

Cutter, try Ocean Park. Go up the road from Ilwaco 10 -11 miles and turn onto the beach at the hardware store. You'll see the diggers like fireflies up the beach as far as you can see.

We just picked a gap in the lights and started finding shows 200 ft from the waters edge.

Have fun!
