Default To rattle or not to rattle, that's the question.

As I was getting my winter steelhead arsenal together, I was just wondering if it's better to have a hot shot or tadpolly that rattles or not?
Which is better, to use one with a rattle or without?

Personal bias of course but the only time I fish a plug without a rattle is low, clear water and if thats the case I'm probably not fishing a plug anyways.

It's difference between Ford and Chevy. Personal preference.

Some people don't like a rattle in low, clear water. I catch plenty of fish with a rattle in those conditions. Usually in the winter when the water is low and clear it is also cold. In cold water fish are a lot more lathargic, making them less spooked. There for a rattle doesn't bother them, boats don't bother them, motors don't bother them......in fact a rattle just might get them a little more interested.

With a Luhr Jensen Side Plainer you can fish plugs from the bank. Make sure you have lots of room from other fishermen.

Also you can cast and retreave them but this works better for summer runs.

You can also fish them straight down stream from you if you find a point of something that gets you out into the current.

I guess I'm just set in my ways but I still prefer tadpollies without rattles. Plus the older models were superior to the new smaller ones.
They cast better when used on the Deschutes too.

Marky-
Hi. There was a very good thread not long ago about side planners and one of the posters covered it very well. Try a search and you will find what you a looking for. I would just provide a direct link to the thread for you but I have not taken the time to learn how yet.
