Default What in the heck is it ????

Ihave all sorts of different mushrooms growing out back of the house in the woods, but this thing...jeez. I saw it from over a hundred foot away, just about 15 feet back of the area I have planted in grass. It's pretty big....
Anybody know what in the heck it is ?

Bio genetically engineered "Ferengi Ears". They grew these for use in costume on Star Trek Deep Space 9. Pretty neat aye!

Looks to be a red-belted polypore, according to the Audubon's mushroom guide. Says it will grow on a possible 100 different types of host trees, year round., through most of mid America up through Canada. I usually don't bother looking up these types of shrooms because most of the poypores aren't edeible. Cool looking none the less.

I found a great big one when I was a kid. I had to jump up and down on it to break off. After lugging it back home, I let it dry out for a few weeks. Then I gave it to my grandma (who's an amazing artist) and she painted a beautiful scene on the onder side of it. It came out great!

I agree, it's a conk. I haven't seen as many here in Washington, but those are all over the place in Alaska.
