Default Fly Rod Question... for a nOOb

I already know what brand I am going to get and it's Scientific America. But I am looking for a decent rod size for trout and and possibly steelhead. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Since it sounds like you are new to fly fishing, live in Medford and will probably be fishing the Rogue, I would recommend a six weight. It will be a little big for trout in the Upper Rogue, but not to small for the moderate size steelhead in the Rogue.

Yeah I would agree. Maybe a 9 foot 6 weight medium to medium heavy on the tip. But the tip is what I myself would like. Depends on your casting style and how you like the rod to feel.

Don't forget that you can by a 6 weight rod and easily cast a 5 weight line if you want to size it down for trout. You can also buy a 5 weight rod and cast a 6 weight line as long as it has a stiff action.

When fighting big fish on a fly rod, the type of rod comes in second to the quality of your drag and how you fight the fish. Cheers!
