slow sturgeoning
After last saturdays slaughter, we were humbled by this saturdays catching. About 1/2 dozen shakers is all we touched. Plus I melted my new rain pants on mr. heater :depressed:
Fished in the M. channel and moved around a bit but it was just plain slow for us. Water clarity is getting better though, so serious salmon fishing is right around the corner.

Re: slow sturgeoning
As the smelt progress upriver those keepers that entered the MC looking for food about a month ago will move out to the main river... all that will be left are skinny little resident snake shakers and the occasional keeper. As we head into the last days of Feb and the first couple weeks of Mar action should be red hot on the big river!

Re: slow sturgeoning
It's tough finding the good quality fish right now. I spent three hours hunting for them in the Channel on Friday and could only muster up about half a dozen smaller fish as well.
I think the bigger fish are down river of the Lewis waiting for the smelt. Once the smelt push through then it will be easier to find them but for now you have to do a lot of moving.
I think once the water warms up a touch in the Columbia and the smelt make it past the Cowlitz, it will be hot and fast fishing. Looking back at my fishing logs this trend seems to rear it's ugly head right after the pilot run of smelt hit the Cowlitz. Once the smelt are in full force, the fishing will slow back down again because the sturgeon are gorged.

Re: slow sturgeoning
I took my neighbor and his granddaughter out to the MC for a few hours. He had never caught a keeper and he got his first at 44" His 8 year old grand daughter got to haul in several shakers. All I did was lose fish. Had a couple that felt keeper size, one broke the mono line I was using and one spit the hook. We had a blast and the weather was great, except for the downpour as we were taking out
