Boat or bank, the bank fishing would be a little easier. Thank you for asking, the main thing is to catch a few fish.

Re: Best place to take kids fishing this time of year
fishalot-
Have you thought about visiting a hatchery and just checking out the rearing ponds ect. instead of fishing? Boneville comes to mind if it is open for public again now. They could see herman learn a few things about fish. Mabey you could see what ones are dealing with fish at the traps and watch that. I have found most guys at the hatcheries are friendly and helpfull when it comes to showing kids stuff. Taking out kids in the cold and wet on the bank just seems to get them down. You still can do the father son thing involve fish and stay drier. Just a thought.
Personally (as long as I have another adult with me) I have found anchor fishing for sturg in the boat is the least stresfull for me with the kids. Though mine are younger than yours. Putting in at Rainer and then running up to tojan and fishing is a popular option in my play book with the kids. I was there several weeks ago and found a couple of willing shakers the kids had fun. We saw fish ran in the boat long enough we all felt like we had a nice bot ride to boot. Lastly don't forget to take them smelt dipping next year kids love that.

Re: Best place to take kids fishing this time of year
Hi, Fishalot-
The 'official' stocking of ponds by the ODFW is completed for the year, but trout are getting stocked nonetheless. I always include these trout plantings in the fishing reports I'm required to write weekly.
Town Lake and Cape Meares Lake have recently received surplus summer steelhead, but the best bet for action will be Walling Pond or walter Wirth Lake (Cascade Gateway Park), both in Salem. These will get a fresh infusion of state-raised rainbows on December 12th.
Have fun. It's great to take kids fishing!

Re: Best place to take kids fishing this time of year
Detroit Res. is a great place to take kids for hatchery trout in December. Bank it or boat it, but I'd recommend a boat if you have one. Its almost (keyword: almost--it is fishing) a sure thing and the action is normally non stop.
Launching can be a challenge but can normally be done if ya dont mind getting a little mud on your boots.
I'd recommend the blow out arm and can pin point a great spot to fish for you if you decide to try it. .

Carefull on the way down if you decide to go to the log boom at detroit, this time of year the rocks are slippery and it's a little hike to get back to the top dont forget anything

Re: Best place to take kids fishing this time of year
Howdy fishalot, I drive to and from Salem a lot and know there are some freeway ponds near the Santiam Hwy exit. The are stocked on a regular basis and easy bank fishing. I believe the names to be Henry Wyrth lakes. I sometimes stop there to avoid heavy traffic and just sit and watch the kids catch trout. Check on the oregon fish and game listings and they list all the ponds they stock by region. They also list the approximate dates they plan to stock. That would be a great way to intoduce and teach you sons to fish without the hassles of towing and launching a boat. I used to asked my girls to go fishing and would always stop by a trout pond in Sandy that charged by the pound. Someone always wanted to go because they knew I would stop there and let them catch four of five to bring home. The girls still love to fish and that makes me happy when they visit. Now, I am getting the son in laws into salmon and steelhead. The best part is that the girls are telling them about my good old days and how to fish. Charrish the time you have with them, it goes quickly. Take lots of pictures.
Keep us posted on the progress.
