need computer help

I have a set of computers.

A desktop (dell Dimension 3000) and a laptop (dell Inspiron 9100)

My new photo software (photoshop 6.0) is terribly slow on my 9100, and slower than I like on my desktop, plus my desktop is in a totally different pasr of the house that I am not in much, so I'd like to know if it is possible to beef up the speed of my laptop... if so, what do you suggest to make photoshop run at a good clip?

I am thinking that a ram upgrade would be good, whot do you folks that are in the loop on this tech stuff suggest?

How much memory is in it currently?

Looks like both come with 512MB standard. If that is still what you have, increasing to 1G you would notice a considerable increase in speed. Go up to 2G and its even better. Memery is cheap now so load up to the max your computer will handle if you can.

There is nothing like a good reformat of your hard drive and clean install of your operating system to speed things up as well while your at it. Good to do at least once a year, especially if you are installing and uninstalling software frequently. Lots of junk gets left behind.

I'll be running 2 gigs in it by the end of the week.

And I'll be bouncing all of my extra stuff to an extra 320 gb hard drive...

One other thing is I noticed a huge speed difference from going from Photoshop 7.0 to CS2. Probably not the most cost effective way but it did speed things up a lot for me.
