I have my eye on Tuesday but the wind forecast needs to come down from the 20kt prediction. Otherwise the swell forecast looks good.

Just curious which forcast you guys are looking at. NOAA? I'm on vacation this week and if the big pond lays down I'd love to drag my boat down for its first salt water bath.

NoAA has not been very reliable for me in the past. I use wetsand.com It provides color gradient maps of wind speeds, swell, ect. Right now wet sands is showing close to 20knt winds for Tuesday but NOAA is saying 10-15. Should have a pretty good idea on Monday. I'm sure it will change one way or the other by then.

I am considering Tuesday or Wednesday, but I'm not sure about the wind going the opposite direction of the swell on Weds. Would this make it a washing-machine? Also, the ebb tide is just about when I would want to return; any bets on whether there will be restrictions under 20'? If we find fish early, I don't want to be stuck out there for several hours waiting for a bar restriction with no other options to fish for.

From 11:30am to 1:30pm there is a 2kt outgoing current. This isn't too bad as long as there's not much in the way of swells. This is the only real sketchy part of the day as far as tides go.

I might be wrong but I think the offshore wind actually flattens the sell. Not sure about the wind wave though. I'm just hoping the wind forecast cleans up a bit.

Offshore wind flattens the swell. The nearshore waters (inside of a mile) can be almost flat even with a strong offshore wind because the chop has not had a chance to form.

But beware of motor failure. An offshore wind will blow you offshore into ever-worsening chop. The antidote is to drop anchor if it is shallow enough, drop a sea anchor or limp in on a kicker.

We drug my boat to the coast this morning. It was looking kind of foggy on the way down. When we got to Astoria it was just low clouds and had good visability all the way across the river. We launched at Cape Disappointment and made a bee-line for the south jetty. Sun was shining, ocean was calm and no issues crossing the bar. Got our limits of bottom fish. Mostly sea bass, a couple of greenling and one ling cod about 28" long. The cool part of the trip was the whale we had surface about 50 yards away from the boat. I've never seen one that close before. Make's a 17 ft Arima seem mighty small.
