Your own personal weather station, almost
I'll admit it, I'm a weather wonk. I was just about ready to drop $200+ setting up my own personal weather station until I found this.
First, you have to have a google homepage setup; it's free and you can add tons of stuff to it beyond just the weather app.
Second, do a search for Weather Underground. These guys are set up to allow folks to upload the weather data from their personal stations to the site. I put up three panels of weather underground PWS charts, one set for today, one for this week, and one for this month.
Third, you need to find a station near you or near what you want to monitor. Go to weather underground's site and put in the zip code. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll find the personal weather stations near there. You'll need the station code from their weather underground page. If you go to the Wundermap, you'll get a google map with the weather stations identified; click on one of them and you'll get a popup that includes their station code. Plop that into the google plugin and you're good to go. Not all of them work with the applet (I wanted to use the Troutdale airport since it's closer to the river but it didn't work).
The one thing that caught my eye was that last Saturday when I was out "trying" to troll on the Columbia, we had a maximum wind speed of 40mph and pretty consistent winds of 20mph (and that was off the water so it was likely worse on the water). No wonder it was whitecapping out there.
Hey Jennie: is your weather station uploading to Wunderground?
Here's a screenshot of my personal weather page.
