Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
At the beginning of the weekend, my kitchen looked like this:
This evening, it looks like this:
What the heck happened? What will happen next?

Pete, I suspect you might have a slight drinking problem if you can't remember what happened, Or did someone put your kitchen up on craigs list when you were not looking?

800 pounds of lath, plaster and Z-brick. All in a day's work! The opening to the chimney was a surprise. Definitely a code issue! And the "segmented support studs" will have to be repaired. Bob Vila used to own my house ... I guess that's why "Bob, The Early Years" never made it to syndication.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
I think I know what happened. Somebody decided to tear your kitchen apart and spend lots of money to make it look new and fancy . Hope you enjoy your new kitchen when it is finished. Keep us informed on the progress.

That looks like work. And I think that was the easy part of the project.
I bet it will be nice when you are done.

You'll find it's REALLY easy to put up recessed shelves!
Go springer fishing....the look will grow on you.
P.S. newspaper covered by visqueen works GREAT at filling in the gaps to the outside.

The 1961 newspaper stuffed in around the chimney was fun. 1962 Chevy II w/ V8 - 300hp, 3spd, AM radio, padded dashboard and alternator: $1895 or $41 a month. Imagine an alternator being an "option"! CloudSoft rolls - 9 for $0.47! 1400 SF 3 BR in Cedar Creek - $10,500 on 50x100 lot with access to bus.

You could get Matthew over there and tape a new show! Something to the effect of "What Bob should have done!"
Have fun with your remodel Pete!

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Busy weekend on the kitchen project. Got all the reframing finished. Added firring strips to all the studs to bring the finished wall to the same depth the lath & plaster was, thus avoiding gaps around the edge of the floor and the ceiling. Got cabinets spec'd out and ordered. Built rails to attach the cabinets to. Started peeling the floor. There are 3 layers. The top layer is thin vinyl with a glue back and comes up easily. Below that is linoleum tile which is glued down hard on top of a linoleum floor which is glued down with asbestos based glue. Originally I was going to leave the oldest floor in place, but I think I'm going to leave two floors down and float cork-backed linoleum tile over the top. Anyway, I have forearms like Popeye.
This week, the electrician will rough in the new outlets and fixtures. Then, I can build the ventilation duct and start drywalling.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Shoot...I'd leave it...just don't tell anyone when you started it...and cleaning? Piece of cake...just hose it down periodically. Frankly, if I were to build a new home, I would eliminate the kitchen (also known as the "k" room...I start to stutter when I try to say kitchen or cooking)

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Extra high ceilings are nice, but no one sells 9 foot drywall ... getting it home was a hassle. And the electrical inspector didn't show up as scheduled, so I can't finish the walls yet. But I got the board cut and located and the parts without electricity are finished and ready for sanding and priming. The area above the fridge alcove will hold a cabinet, so no finish work needed.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
back when i used to do drywall and we had nine or ten foot ceilings we would hang a sheet horizontal against the rafters, a horizontal sheet from the floor up and then what they call a belly band in the middle. seemed to finish out real nice.

The kitchen must've had an genuine wood (or oil) stove at one time. I guess your house is rather.......vintage.
I remember busting down a few lath and plaster walls in my youth. Not fond memories. I hate working with drywall, but it's a lot better than it's plaster ancestor.

Maybe I misunderstand...but you still want to drywall this area and mud and tape the joints to seal it off per fire code.

Dan, I do plan to finish off the wall in the back. Above the area you can see there are finished walls. The alcove used to be a pantry closet.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Friday, the inspector showed up and signed off on closing up the walls, so I got the vent stack put together and closed up the walls. Then it was endless mudding and sanding. I attached a new waterline for the ice maker, but the saddle junction on the waterline failed ... I guess something rusted out inside it, so I spent a good bit of time cleaning that up and getting a new fitting. It doesn't look much different, but it was really a lot of time investment.
These were taken Saturday, before the first sanding. The colored squares in the second picture are samples of Marmoleum. I think the floor is going to be a checkerboard with those.

looking good....one question though. what the heck is marmoleum? is that the peel and stick stuff? or are you going tile or laminate?

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
One of the very first green products:
Marmoleum is made with natural ingredients without any harmful VOC's or other toxic chemicals. The sheet goods are installed with solvent free adhesives and Marmoleum Click is installed without any adhesive. Marmoleum has no adverse health issues whatsoever, either during production, its useful life, or disposal. It is truely sustainable.
It used to be used as a countertop or table top material as well as long lasting floor covering. One of it's attributes is the depth of the color and pattern. If you scrape it real deep you still see the same color and pattern as the top finish. Not to mention it's flexability and long life.
Great choice Pete, a classy product that has stayed the test of time.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Marmoleum Click is a free floating tile or panel surface which is mounted on a fiber substrate with a cork backing. It's relatively easy to install, feels warm underfoot in the winter and is relatively maintenance free.
I'm also using energy star appliances ... most are these days. I'm using a Miller zero VOC paint and if I can get a source which won't require that I buy a full sheet, I'm going to try Paperstone counters. It's made from 100% recycled post-consumer paper, with a waterbased resin binder. It's temperature tolerant to 350 degrees, so most hot pots can be set down on it directly. It can be worked with woodworking tools and unlike granite, which feels cold to the touch, Paperstone feels warm to the touch. Interesting product. If you've been to a Starbucks, the counters there are made of Paperstone.
I should comment on the vent system. Did you notice it's going down? I'm running it down and then out to the outside between floor joists. Venting straight up isn't an option, since there is a room above and turning to run through the ceiling would require disrupting the lath and plaster ceiling and the joists in the ceiling run the wrong direction. I thought about dropping the ceiling, but that would cause a problem with the existing cabinets which run to the ceiling. So, down and out was the solution and the cantilevered corner location for the range created space for the vent pipe. The hood I'm using is 400 cfm and should be fine pushing hot air out. If it isn't, I'll add a booster at the far end of the vent pipe.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Another interesting solution ...
When I pulled off the lath and plaster, I found that at some time, there was a vent into the chimney stack.
I needed a plug to fit inside the ceramic pipe. I originally covered it with plastic as a temporary solution. Then I stuck foil in the pipe. Over time, fiddling with it, I pressed the foil into the pipe. Without realizing it at first, I created a perfect mold. Then I found a product called Rockite, a quicksetting, expanding concrete.
And after the Rockite set up, I buttered the edges of my plug and slid it into the pipe - a perfect, air-tight, fireproof plug!

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
interesting sounding product. how does it hold up as far as cracking etc? I made the huge mistake of buysing some of the edge brand click floating tile and have had many cracks.....they have since closed the product out and i have replaced with real tile floors. I will have to look that stuff up online and become more informed.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
It doesn't crack ... it's the product you knew as linoleum, but with a different substrate. The linseed oil, resin and wood flour product known as linoleum is mounted on a board and branded as marmoleum.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Pete,
We plan to lay Marmoleum this summer. I ordered several color samples and am still trying to decide.
Planning on using the planks rather than the tiles. Make sure and update us after it's been down a few weeks, Okay?
Trying to talk hubby into replacing bathroom vinyl with it also.

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Today was a big day. I was up early to get paint on the walls because today was appliance day. The appliances arrived early, but not without trouble. The stove fit into my kitchen fine, but the refrigerator was too wide even with the doors removed. The specs didn't reveal that the lower hinges don't come off. So, I had to removed some doors to get it in. Thankfully, I didn't have to undo any of the casings.
Assembling the fridge and stove took some time. There were moments of concern about the refrigerator fitting the space I'd built. 1/4 inch drywall tolerances are tough to count on, but hey! It fit. After a day of work, I have a functioning kitchen! Not bad for a little over 3 weeks!
The floor will have to wait a couple weeks and the cabinets are many weeks away. I'm over the big hump, with a couple little humps to go!

Re: Holy crud? What happened to my kitchen?
Well its certainly shaping up ...
The only concern I have for you is the rocktite plug ...
I tried to research on-line about the refractory characteristics of rocktite and found no mention of any ...
I realize it is sheetrocked over but I would hate to see it fracture over time while exposed to heat from the flue ...
Rocktite is typically used to hold anchors or patch fractures ...
