Default Shad Smolt

Where do you go to get shad smolt? Can you jig for them or net them? What type of water do they hold in? Thanks

Don't know where you can buy them, but I've seen a some floating down the Columbia at the Fishery. They'll hit dick nites just like an adult shad. We were catching them while fishing for ********* during the summer. Great keeper bait.

I'm not certain, but I believe you need a special license to get shad smolt ... I think the method of choice is netting. I believe this has been discussed on Don's Sturgeon Salmon & Steelhead web page. If you can't find it, drop Don an e-mail.

I hooked 3 of them while fishing with a dick nite. was up below the Willamette falls.(at dead line) Was in a little back eddy ?????
Don't know if it was a fluke or what. Because it was in the middle of last years shad run. ?????? I would think that it would take a little bit longer then that for therer to be smolts around. Oh well, I just vac-pac them with all the others, and will just thread them on like a smelt.

I had never even seen them before, but they look just like the adult shad, except that they're about 4 inches long. Will try to target them next season.
