Default This better have been an accident....

Someone from this board sent me an email with a virus in it. No subject or topic, just a virus attachment. Needless to say I am not happy about it, am waiting for an explanation, and I seriously hope it was some kind of accident. I am waiting.

what was the virus??? many of them just go into the Outlook address book, attach themselves to all addresses, and send!! Once infected, this can and does happen in the background without the user knowing!!

Looks like this is what happened. I have emailed him about it. Hopefully he will get it fixed.

I also received two messages yesterday that got through our network firewall and anti-virus software with questionable attachments. I let our IS dept. know and they updated the virus dat files. I don't know if it came up as a virus, but then I never open unsolicited attachments.

It came from an advertiser here on Ifish. Wen't to the advertiser's website and they have a message stating that the virus has been cleaned up and that they were sorry for letting it get by them. This advertiser is one of my favorites. Probably some of the nicest people you could ever meet and would never do anything like this intentionally.

This rash of viruses that attack Microsoft email products are completely unnecessary. I use Macs and never have to worry about it. You should direct your anger towards Microsoft for shipping products with such blatant, well known, and easily attacked security holes. They have been warned for years by users and developers yet they never seem to ever fix the problem. (The joys of a monopoly shipping low quality, defective products)

I receive dozens of these emails every time a new virus is created. Thanks to Apple's and the Mac's great security model I simply don't have to worry about them, unless I use MicroSoft email products when running Windows emulation. Hence, I avoid Outlook like the plague.

If you want to put an end to the email virus problem, use someone else's email product and ditch Outlook.

Good Luck...

Don't have Outlook, don't like Microsoft, like Macs even less. Sorry to you Mac fans, but that reverse-Mac-logic crap irritates the hell out of me!!

Sheesh - sounds like someone (I won't mention names buddy  has a Microsoft chip on his shoulder...

The main reason Outlook is attacked so much is that it is the most widely used email system on earth. There's no glory in creating virus's that will only impact a handful of people. Yes, people intentionally create viruses for attention or to try to make someone who is successful look bad.

Further more, MS takes security and viruses very seriously, and as quickly as possible puts patches out for people to use. Problem is, is that most folks don't bother getting the free fixes until they get burned.

No try ranting about something that makes sense...

Yep, I've got an MS chip on my shoulder where Outlook is concerned.

Don't be fooled by that argument regarding its wide use being the cause of all the problems though. If MS wouldn't ship an email client that will run code from any outside source, then these types of viruses simply wouldn't work.

Unix is widely used also and where are all the viruses that should be plaguing it? The only known Mac email viruses attack Outlook, and no othe product. There's a good reason why most of these are targetted at Outlook. It's because its so easy to create such a big effect with so little expertise.

What kind of security policy allows code from an email attachment to execute at the system level??? This is the most brain dead security model possible. Anybody with a little knowledge can send an email to Outlook and it will run it as code. Think about it. That "feature" has very little real life value except as a conduit for viruses.

It's amazing they haven't dropped it yet, especially after the amount of trouble its caused millions of users world wide.

Most people will continue using Windows. Thats a given and a reality that won't change soon. But its not Windows, per se, that 's the problem here, its Outlook. Use it at your own risk...

I'll go away now to my highly secure and reliable Mac...
