Default Mackerel?

I caught what appears to be a Mackerel in the CR below the Astoria bridge.
Any one catch these alot?
It was so tasty.

It had a tail like a tuna. All the dorsal fins went down into a groove on the back.
Mouth like a shad. Took a trolled herring.
This was years ago.
I am looking for more info on this fish. Is it really a Mackerel?

Its not a mackerel ... Darned if it doesn't look like a snook except for the tuna tail ...

I have caught a few of them in the ocean,never in the river,some up to 7 or 8 lbs. We always called them horse mackeral, I don't know the true name for them.
The other one pictured above,are Pacific mackeral, and they do make good crab bait. They are my bait of choice for halibut, and I have been know to fillet one for a kwik fish wrap.

Thanks, I looked up Horse makerel and it says it is called a pilot fish also.


I would like to catch more. It was really good to eat.

jack mackerel,...I've caught a few while trolling south of the CR bouy.Kinda soft and ugly,but as said before great crab bait.
