Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Is anybody here going to the OBH convention this year? I just got renewed as a member and would like to go but it's the same weekend as the Horse Fair and Expo in Albany and the wife really wants to go to that. I heard a rumor that it might be somewhere up this way next year. That would be a great idea to move it around a little and get the word out that there is an organization out there that is promoting bowhunting in Oregon. It seems like the OBH should be a much larger voice when you look at the numbers of new archers.
Here is the info anyhow.....

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
I'll be there. Would rather be home w/the new horse but was already registered to shoot and paid for our banquet pics. That and...I gotta pick something up at the banquet.
Dr. Jack Frost is the speaker this year. Should be really, really good. Let me know if you decide to make it.
My Mo-in-law is going to the Albany horse get-together. Am sending her w/a shopping list : )
OBH is trying real hard to rebound from many years of so-so activity. The past few years have seen increased numbers of shooters doing indoor, but the field shoot and 3D continue to drop. Not sure if it's gas prices or video games, but people just don't get out like they used to : (
I amazes me too that Archery has grown so much yet OBH continues to struggle. I will say that those that are getting out and defending our interests are working very hard. Would really be nice if they had more support.
Sort of like the sticker on the dash of my boat..."This boat doesn't run on Thank You's"

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Well that is shocking to me that with all the archers on here only one ifisher is going for sure. If I can swing it I will let you know Mellow Yellow.
This has me very curious.....how many of you are members of the OBH? I know there are a lot of organizations to donate to but if you value liberal bow seasons when the facts allow them you really need to consider joining! Better yet be one of the people that MY mentioned that are "defending our interests". I know I have been pretty lax but it's time I step up and do something....

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
I plan on attending the banquet and seminar. I haven't been on ifish in awhile. Too much moderation.

I am sure there are plenty of Ifishers who would attend, but many of us have lives beyond the OBH Banquet. I was actually going to compete in the state shoot, but I have a prior engagement that will only allow me to be there one day. Since I cant shoot, for me personally there is no point in attending this year.
Please dont apply the peer to those who cant attend. I am sure it is a great banquet and fundraiser.

I guess I must have come across wrong. I am not trying to "apply the peer" to anybody. Mainly I was curious of how much support there is for the OBH. Considering they are "the voice" for archers in Oregon obviously I would like to see the organization get more support but going to the convention is a small part of that.
I've let my membership slide a couple times over the years because it just didn't seem like they accomplished much and at one point it seemed like it was all about arguing with the Traditional Archers of Oregon. I got my fill of reading about that saga right away.
At any rate I decided I am going to give the organization another try and hope that I personally can have a positive impact rather than just sending in some money and hoping my interests are defended.

Being on the board I know they are always looking for help. There are openings on the board and you can help guide how things get done.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Joe; No worries here.
I know all too well about the argument between the modern archery hunters and the "Kinetically Challenged".
There have been a couple people in that oragnization that have rubbed me the wrong way personally with their ego's but I never looked at it as how the organization was structured. There are some really outstanding people like JJelkhorn (Jeff) that I would share a camp with anyday of the week. I know they do a great job with what they have to work with, but for me and my schedule - I just dont have the time to attend this year. I have had a few guys ribbing me about shooting down there, I guess I'll have to take care of them in Redding.
If we only had two day work weeks, that would be much better

I would love to see OBH get a little more membership involvement. They don't have regular chapter meetings just Board meetings.
I belong to OHA. They have several chapters around the State, and have monthly chapter meetings, do banquets, habitat enhancement, youth events, etc.
There are bow hunters, rifle hunters, and water fowlers in OHA.
I belong to OBH, because I like to support the organizations that I am interested in, and I have a good time at the State convention.
These days the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is going to get more attention from me. It is the only National organization dedicated to preserving our hunting rights.
OHA is the best Oregon Hunting organization bar none, because of their dedication to preserving our hunting rights in Oregon and all of their volunteer hours toward habitat restoration for wildlife.

Just print this form, fill it out and send it in. If you click on Membership on the OBH site this link is on the bottom of the page.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Life member of OBH and I'll be there.
OBH was the premier organization dealing with ODFW before OHA and some of the other organizations existed. There are only so many people willing or able to give their time. All the orgs do the best they can with the resources they have.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Another great convention this last weekend. Got to meet Blacktail Bowhunter Saturday night and hear a great talk by Jack Frost. Spent about 2 hours talking with him after the banquet about hunting around the country. Might have met some other I-Fishers, but didn't know it. Looks like next years convention might be at Chinook Winds, know more in a month. Have some other ideas in the works that will be pretty good, so stay tuned.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
A change in venue would be refreshing. We've gone to Seven Feathers the last three years and have always had an 'alright' time, but it's starting to feel like a rerun. Doesn't help that I'm trying to also celebrate a wedding anniversary on the same weekend. Romeo, Robin Hood, Romeo, Robin Hood.
I really enjoyed Dr. Frost's presentation. Wish it were longer and the auctions shorter though. Still, good to see proceeds going to a good cause.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
I got to sit with JJ Elkhorn and the bowhunter of the year.
I wish I would have known the other ifishers that were there. It would have been nice to put names to faces.
I was the guy that donated that wing bone turkey yelper to the live auction. I was a little shaky, but I did manage a couple of good yelps.

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
Well I'm sorry I couldn't make it. It would be great to get to meet you guys. Next year I will be there for sure. If it's at Chinook Winds that is only 30 minutes away.
So what did you have to pick up Mellow Yellow? An award of some kind I assume?

Aw c'mon, I'm trying to remain humble.
(and somewhat anonymous)
There are certainly much better target archers around, but I guess you gotta play to win...2nd place Triple Crown - Men's Freestyle

Re: Oregon Bow Hunters convention
By the way....anyone know how the shoot ended up? I had to leave early Sunday.
I was fortunate enough to shoot w/Cabe Johnson (Spott Hogg) on Saturday morning. Extremely nice guy and man can he shoot. Perfect score on Saturday with a 300 and 60 x's (those are like 1" x's btw).
Am pretty sure someone else here was in the running for men's freestyle after the first round, something like 300 and 57 x's?. Curious how it ended up.
Personally, I did just ok. Have never done well at indoor. Between the "I think I'm going to faint jitters" and just plain lack of confidence, I ended the first day with a 300 but only 43 x's. Next day my x count was up a bit but I dropped two points.
I did learn a valuable lesson though. Make sure you put on fresh feathers! The bails were pretty hard and my feathers weren't used to stopping that fast. The second day I started losing feathers and ended up with a pile of feather-pieces in front of my target.
I much prefer to shoot outdoors...

I started out a little rough with a 55x but ended up sunday with a decent score and shot a 59x, Put me tied for second in the AMFS. I was only out by a 1/32 but every bit counts!
Who was from on here that shot on of the 57x? Bob Looney? Ben English? Keith Swanson? Dave Nelson?
