Default Virus warning, sorry, but please?

Guys, can't stress the importance, in these days of updating your virus definitions every night, and running a mail protection system.
Lots going on out there, especially with the newest one:
Win32/Badtrans.B@mm
Please, be careful. I am protected, but have gotten several e mails containing this one.
Thanks,
Jen

To fix this, if you believe you have it, go to:
www.norton.com and download the fix. It's easy.

Yeah. I just got an email from someone on this board that had that virus message popup when I tried to open his email. What the hell is up with that? I realize you may not like stuff I say, but to send me a virus is pretty damned low. I will refrain from saying who it was, for now. Suffice to say that I don't appreciate it.

No, no no no! Don't blame others for this.
This is an innocent virus. The people sending it don't realize, in most cases that they are sending it.
That's the problem with these viruses. They are sent out whenever they log on to the internet, without the infected person knowing it. It goes into Internet Explorers e mail list and starts sending them out. They know nothing.
It's easy to think it is on purpose, but rarely is that the case.

OK, thanks for clearing that up Jennie. I wondered about that. The senders address looked a little funny. I will keep that in mind.

Concerning Badtrans worm....

W32.Badtrans.B@mm is a MAPI worm that emails itself out using different file names. It also creates the file \Windows\System\Kdll.dll. It uses functions from this file to log keystrokes.
(hence can obtain sensitive data...ie: usernames
passwords)

it's infection
rate has been skyrocketing...I am a technical
manager / sys admin for a local ISP and this virus is spreading very fast.....several of my
customers have been infected and the calls are
increasing each day
the specific details can be found at :

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...rans.b@mm.html

I'm pretty good with type of stuff....if anyone
needs help , feel free to email me and I'll do
what I can.

Messy virus. My system started acting strange and I also received emails from other folks with "attachments", but when I clicked on them there was nothing there and the whole thing went away.
Downloaded the latest McAfee off the internet to my system (www.mcafee.com) and it promptly located that miserable thing in my Windows directory. Like others sending it, I didn't know it was there. Just have to watch the systems and make sure your virus software is up to date which is what bit me.

I like to "play" with software. I downloadstuff CONTANTLY!!! So, just a couple of tips....
FIRST- Create a folder...name it "Quarantine"...whatever. Mine is "New ****" EVERYTHING that goes INTO your 'puter goes THERE first!!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
SECOND- Scan it with MORE THAN ONE UPDATED Virus scanner!!!! OK, most folks only use one. I have 2 installed, and then use this
Housecall Antivirus
THIRD- Move it to where you would like it to "live" on your 'puter!! Email attatchments are the SAME...RIGHT click, then save to the "Quarantine" folder!!!
Really, there is NO REASON to EVER catch computer HIV's...Just practice Safe Surfing!!!!

OK, NOW I'm answering myself!!!! If you DO NOT have a firewall installed...DO SO NOW!!!! This one is free, good, and "idiot proof" Totally intuitive....it will ASK what should be allowed access to the web! Zone Alarm OK, I confess!!! I have INTENTIONALLY "infected" myself with many of the trojans out there right now. Sub Seven, Netbus..you name it!!! A good Firewall WILL stop access to these!! I got my boss with one, had his cd rom going in and out, while flashing "FEED ME" on the screen!!! Funny, and I AM not malicious....but I also had access to ALL of his online investments (He BELIEVED when I told him what he should hold and sell!!!)...I could have sold his stock!! Had he had a simple firewall in place....OK, he DID the next day!!!! It may SOUND a bit complicated, but it is REALLY VERY simple!!! And, once setup, is never even noticed!!

I have Zone Alarm. I like it.
But doesn't it slow things down a bit?
Not sure, but seems like it.
Guess it is worth it for security.
Can't steal my stocks though... Don't have any!

I have not seen that with Zone Alarm...But running "Virus scan" proggys DEFINITELY does!!! Darn, I forgot to say....TURN OFF AUTO protect...Read my OTHER post!!! DO NOT let these resource hogs run your system!!! Put them away, and then MANUALLY scan before you open or move!!! Virus scanners will SLOW your system to a CRAWL!!!! Scan it ONCE, and BE DONE!!! You dont NEED EVERY FILE SCANNED, EVERY time you open it!!!!

He knows it, bait, and he is doing it on purpose to you!!! I'm kidding! Please, I'm kidding!
Jim knows it and I am trying to help him.
He doesn't like it any better than you do.
You have to get on the internet to get rid of it, to download the fix, or the update, so hang in there. If your virus protection is up to date, you don't need to worry.
Just don't open anything!!!

I have gotten it 4 times from ifish members in the last 2 days. The common denominator is their is an attachment and the return email address has an underscore in the front of it. If you try to respond, it doesnt go because it is an invalid email address.

Just want to apologize to anyone out there who got the virus. I discovered it when I turned on my email and it had sent numerous emails to others. I immediately shut it off but the damage was done. I had MacAfee and Oregoncoast protectors but neither one solved the problem. Now have Norton and it doesnt work either so I stay off the email until I can get the problem resolved. Any good gurus out there? Norton did a scan and of five years on this system I had 2 pieces of infected mail. I guess that was enough so again sorry. I would never intentionally send a virus and hope there is a special button pushing hell for those that do.

I too have Zone Alarm, but find that it alone won't stop incoming viruses. I use Zone Alarm in conjunction with Mcafee, and haven't had a virus problem since. All incoming viruses have been stopped immediately before they can do any damage. I have McAfee set up to update itself every day so I always have the latest .dat files. I've been hit with the "Nimda" virus several times recently, but each time McAfee stopped it on the spot.

I haven't noticed Zone Alarm slowing down my computer, but with the constant connection cable access provides, even if it did it is definitely worth having in my opinion. A good computer will compensate for any drag a program like this puts on your system.

Like Capt. Hook said, people can be infected without knowing it. The best protection is good antivirus software that is updated AT LEAST every month. The internet these days is kind of like the untamed wild wild west.

I had a total computer meltdown once because of a virus - don't let it happen to you! Once is a mistake, twice is your own fault.

Seriously not funny, virus attacks cause mega problems. I have not had any but the code red. It messed me up for months. I have a firewall, antivirus software, and delete more email than I read or open. I work hard to keep it clean and it has paid off by keeping me virus free, err... well almost.

Update AT LEAST every two days. I do it nightly. It's automatic with Norton. I really like the features of Norton.
It all happens in the background with no work from me!
Some people have trouble with it, but I sure haven't.

I ended up with this virus on my system and eliminated it by downloading the latest McAfee from the web at McAfee.com. Sorry, Jenny, I've used Norton and their "nifty" software crashed my entire system, so I won't go back to them. I had "Cleansweep" installed for about a year and ended up with nothing but problems. McAfee can nail the virus! I work for a very large semiconductor manufacturer and we use....McAfee!. Download what you need at McAfee.com. No....it's not free. Yes...it does work!

Jennie-

McAfee Afee Afee! No, seriously, I used and still have Norton's Cleansweep which is what gave me all the headaches. I will identify things on your system that you don't need and give you a "green light" to delete them. Well, after a couple of deletions of Norton's suggested file list, my 'puter kind of rolled to a stop and I couldn't run half my stuff. Finally deleted the whole mess of my system. Thought it was me but two friends at work had similiar results. One of them took it back to Office Depot and got a refund.

I don't think Cleansweep is an antivirus program. Antivirus 2001 (and now 2002) is a pretty dynamic scanning program which can be set to screen anything coming in or out of your computer. Further, the e-mail screen can be done remotely at Symantec - causing your mail to slow just slightly, but preventing anything from getting into your machine.

If I were going to suggest a protocol, I'd say 1) install and load an antivirus program that automatically updates the virus definitions and set it to the highest state of protection, 2) follow safe practices: don't open attachments in e-mail, 3) use an e-mail program not produced by Microsoft, 4) use any screening tools your ISP may have, 5) use personal firewall software and 6) use a hardware firewall.

All this can be set up so it's transparent to the user and I can attest that it is effective. I have only once received a virus over the internet and Norton alerted me before it openned. ... so now I've probably jinxed myself, huh?

One more note. I was listening to a computer talk show yesterday. They brought up the fact that badtrans is running wild in the area. According to them it is a worm not a virus. They claimed it is not destructive like a virus and you can be infected without doing anything. It enters your mail system and attaches itself to outgoing mail or simply sends whatever as it did to me. It gathers information from your keyboard then screws with your system. Hope Norton can solve the problem. So far it has done nothing.

I don't use the Clean sweep feature on Norton 2002.
I just like the e mail protect and the auto live update features. I'm lazy...
