sugestion, hook and cable to catch giant sguid
I have been thinking about the idea of somehow trying to catch a giant squid with hook and line, I see no reason why this can't be done. Giant squid do exist they have been pulled up in fishing nets and dead ones have been washed up on beeches in other countries. Giant squid are predaters and feed on other large animals in the ocean. There have been many expeditions in hopes of getting one of these on film, with no success. I think the best bet for a live capture would be to troll with heavy duty equipment. A quickfish the size of a small car would be a good choice or troll a shark. I would like to hear your feedback.

It's gonna take a mighty big Penn reel to hold 3 miles of cable. What do you suppose that would weigh?

What are you gonna do when you catch it? If it eats large ocean animals it might think you are a snack. Stop smoking that anchor rope!

Howdy "big black mouth"
Send me an e-mail if you want some giant squid fishing tech.
We used k16000 kwikfish in the old days for those bad boys but now have switched to bobber and jig...well actually the jig consists of a whole ostrich above a 50lb cannon ball...but much more of a pureist thing ya know, don't you agree?

Re: sugestion, hook and cable to catch giant sguid
BEEN THERE! On the Polaris Supreme, at Alijos Rocks. 500 miles down Mexico way. Nursing a major hangover at 2 am, I walked out on the deck, looking into the water, with all the lights on, at anchor. The water was white, and glowing with movement. Gringo, the deckhand, screamed-"giant squid". Within 2 minuites, the entire boat was at the rail. Nothing under 60lb line Tommy Rothery hollared on the PA. Large Squid Jigs all the way. Drop/hang on. Caught a 65lb yellowtail that night as well. A buddy caught a 200lb MAKO that night as well. Of the few that got landed, they cut specific parts of them up for food, and cut strips up for yellowtail, and grouper bait. Boy do they pull. No little sturgeon pole with a 4/0 is gonna turn um. Whatta sight. !!! I tore my gear up on that trip. I'mm gonna be 50 this year. I sure would love to go back w/ Tommy. 200lb yellowfins, 70lb Wahoos, 70 Yellowtails. 10 day long range trip. Soooooo cool. $2000+
I made payments to myself for a year so I new it was paid for when I went. I didn't plan for the 2500lbs of meat I came home with. Holly Smokes!
I'm sure there's other places to catch giant squid, check with Tommy.

Re: sugestion, hook and cable to catch giant sguid
I talked to a professor at the UW about two years ago and he said that they had tried this and fished for a little over a week. They changed the kind of bait every few days and had one "take down" but ended up bending the 3/4" steel hook. Nobody knows what they hooked but you'd think they'd have better gear.

Re: sugestion, hook and cable to catch giant sguid
During the last El Nino, we had a run of Humbolt (AKA Chilean giant) squid off northern CA. They weigh between 15-30 pounds. The party boats started running trips targeting these bad boys. 10-20 a rod was not uncommon and when you were in em, it was fast and furious. Alot like albacore, lots of looking, but when you found em, they came over the rail fast. We used standard bottomfishing gear, with diamond bars. These things were in the top 60' of the water column though, in blue water, 25+miles out, near the Cordell banks. Like Jimmy said, they pull like trains, and we lost a bunch but you just retied and hooked up another. Lasted about six weeks. Sounds great, right?
Well, they taste like garbage. The mantel was about 1.5' long and 1/4-1/2" thick. You could pound it, slice it thin, marinade it, it still tasted like low grade tire. Nothing like having 300 pounds of inedible squid on your hands.
Decent crab bait though. And that's where mine went.
