Local Talk Radio Hits Home
Yesterday on Lars Larson, he had segments on both cougars and wolves. The cougar thoughts already covered in another thread. Also talked about wolves and how the population is exploding in Idaho. How here in Oregon a rancher cannot even shoot a wolf if it had killed and is eating his livestock. This tree hugger stuff has got to go! Between the sea lions, cougars and wolves (and many other issues), we are loosing our outdoor liberties. I dont want to get political here...but may I suggest that your vote for candidates that will support outdoorsmen and slow down the idea that we can return the earth to the pre-man state.
It is interesting how some think...on one hand man supposidly has the power to ruin the earth via carbon emissions, but we must take a hands off approach to the wildlife and let them sort out their own population swings through starvation. We need to put pressure on the Fish and Game, for we are the ones paying for management. I think that talk radio is making an impact on the general public philosophy, and local talk is better than national.

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
Good post Old Salt, contrary to popular belief we can discuss issues like this without bringing partisan politics into the conversation. Everyone will probably agree that both major parties contain both some whackos and some friends of sportsmen. The way to make a difference is to voice our concerns when relevant issues come up, then examine their voting record at election time and hold them accountable for their decisions. That is exactly why we're in this mess now – the people that are opposed to our way of life ARE vocal, they DO write letters & make phone calls, and they WILL vote at election time… Well, 30-50% of them anyway but that’s apparently enough.
The bigger picture is that the "Anti" groups have been at work for a very long time changing the way that America thinks. They realized early on that the "gun lobby" was very powerful and that hunting was sacred, hence they decided to "breed it out of us". Children became their target and for more than 20 years they have been indoctrinated with the mantra of the Anti's:
”Don't hit, violence is never an option”
“All problems can be solved by talking”
”Run, don't fight back”
”Guns are bad”
“Animals are our friends”
“Animals have feelings too”
“We don’t kill our friends”
”Hunting is bad”
”Don’t keep score, it could hunt someone’s feelings”
“Don’t speak out if it will hurt someone’s feelings”
And finally,
“It’s not your fault!”
At the same time kids were learning this in school, the reduced emphasis on civics and personal responsibility effectively insured a generation of robots that would do as told. Not coincidentally, television and other forms of media began to “dumb down” their programming to guarantee that the kids remained compliant through adulthood. After all, every dictator knows that a stupid populace is an easily controlled populace...
Basically, it’s a successful social engineering project that has moved Americans away from their rural roots and free-thinking mentality. All we need to do is look at the hypocrisy associated with ideals like “Political Correctness” to realize how much of our freedom has been willingly given away by the robots. The scary part is that it's getting worse, not better!

Not sure what school you are seeing this in, but my peers and I are quite the opposite in your line of statements.
Maybe I worked in three unique schools. I doubt it.
Do I believe it's out there? You bet.
But the blanket statement; "At the same time kids were learning this in school, the reduced emphasis on civics and personal responsibility effectively insured a generation of robots that would do as told", for schools is wrong.
Check the soccer fields on a Saturday morning. It's rich in trophies and snack for all.

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
old salt great subject it is going to get pretty heated. but i beleave that there has to be a balance for hunter and hippies. we need to protect all wildlife but not destory it, and as hunter and fisherman we should be at the front of the charge to protect our rights. if that means we vote write letters or contribute money then that is what we have to do. also it means that we as a group need to crack down on the small group of dumbies that poach, catch more than the limit or litter turn them in, that way when we are critisised we can look at what we have done. great post

No offense intended to teachers in general - my statement refers to America as a whole and not any particular individual. With all due respect though, your view has a pretty narrow scope and kids playing soccer really doesn't apply to what I'm talking about. To clarify the areas where my point is relevant, please refer to the American metropolitan areas identified in blue below:
The vast majority of kids in these areas aren't familiar with America's "rural" way of life and the realities associated with it. In fact, many of them don't know that the meat that comes from the supermarket actually comes from dead animals. IMHO, common sense and personal responsibility have largely been replaced by hype and the notion that "It's not my fault because (insert lame excuse here)". There will obviously be exceptions to every argument but are you actually saying that American children today have more common sense, take more personal responsibility and speak more freely than 20 years ago?

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
I am in agreement with Old Salt and even CL cause we are not talking canned hunts here. But I think your right both right
I wear my Rocky Mt and OHA hats in public just to let them know we have not all gone away. We should have some t shirts made up that say I am a hunter and I love deer and elk.

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
Gees you guys are making me blush . I am even considering giving SCI some sign me up money and I hated them for years because I thought they bolstered the canned hunting after futher research and a couple of reamings I can see they do a lot for hunters.
BUT I still don't like penned hunting

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
CL: Appreciate your post. I certainly agree with your evaluation of where our society is going. What is particularly frustrating is that the "all problems can be solved by talking" and another one I would add "everyone's opinion carries equal weight and value" mantras have invaded our resource management agencies. Don't think I have ever been as discouraged as I was while participating in the road management planning process for the Ochoco-Deschutes national forests.

You guys should start listening to KXL 750 in the morning and early afternoon. Yesterday Gary Loomis was on talking about salmon recovery and a biologist as well. Talk radio does make an impact on minds that are open to logic.

Bill O'reilly and Lars Larsen are nothing more than demagogues who deliver prejudiced news and information to drive an agenda. I've listened to their shows and believe that the level of discourse that they purvey is subjacent to any reasonable standard of journalistic decorum. Don't believe everything you read and be even more skeptical of things that you hear.

Depends on your point of view...I consider all news media to be demagogued. Just a matter of which side of the issue you are on. I for one am refreshed to have someone stand up for the second amendment, shooting sea lions, concealed handgun laws, big government expansion, rediculous government regulations and laws...list goes on. I dont see how you can be a hunter and consider someone pushing these issues as a negative. I can barely stand to read the Oregonian or watch the local broadcast news.

Re: Local Talk Radio Hits Home
intelligent discourse is why i listen to some talk radio, and NOT others. i emailed lars the scoutdog odfw funding proposal, one day while he was on the air, he took the time to read it and responded by email while on air. i do not always agree with him, but he is intelligent and its worth listening to his progam most days.

Wolves... Sealions .... How about Sperm & Orca whales?
These two whales love to snack on fishing gear being hauled. They love black cod and are learning to love halibut too.

So does every other TV News station or radio.
By the way, did you see the train wreck edition, and the bird that flew into the window and died back in Arkansas WOW. That was almost as bad as little Raymond's pet hamster getting smashed by a dumbell that rolled over him the day before the pet parade.
This year the blue ribbon is gonna go to Polly Charlene's ping pong playing parrot.
I guess Raymond's dad is going to file a law suit against Raymond's P.E. teacher for calling him scrawny, because Raymond got a complex and he wouldn't have been lifting dumbbells if the P.E. teacher wouldn't have made the scrawny comment, in turn Raymond's little pet Hamster Liberace wouldn't have been killed, so obviously it is the P.E. teachers fault.
Word is that Raymond's mom went on to Teachkind and found out how smart hamsters are. She even made a blue sequin jacket for Liberace, and Raymond taught little Liberace how to sit at a piano and pound on it with his nose.
