Cheap crab bait

I went an bought some leftover fresh turkeys for 47 cents a pound. Cut the breasts out and freeze for my consumption later, and convert the rest into crabs.

Ocean crabbing opens this weekend! Hope the weather cooperates!

If you want cheaper bait than that, look in the paper...its full of ads for FREE crab bait. They typically read:

"Kittens...Free to good home" :shocked:

I used to work in a store that had a "Bulletin Board" for customers. I was advised one day by a regular customer that "Free Kittens" were being fed to some guy's pet boa.

I know of a few bikers that were needing some meat of a BBQ and didn't want to pay much so they looked up a free pot bellied pig (50 lbr) in the newspaper and went to the ladies house. They told her about a nice "farm house" it would live in and a bunch of other b.s. Eventually that pig made it to their home but unfortunetely it was half digested by then.

I was with a fellow Ifisher, we use raw chicken. It worked well as turkey. Afterward, the leftovers were tossed to the seagulls.

It was explained to me that the seagulls were having "Relatives for Dinner."

Isn't that a holiday tradition? :shocked:

I have some friends who use abandoned little dogs..I.E. Poodles, etc for chasing coyotes. They tie them up out in a feild and get the coyotes on the way in. I Sitll haven't convinced my aunt to let me take care of her obnoxious little poodle yet though. I guess it works great if you can shoot quick..

Hey guys; I have the best crab bait you can get.
It can turn nasty in a New York second. It's my sister-in-law. If you like I can send her out,and I'll cover shipping! But then again,,,I don't think dumping is legal :depressed:

I keep my sturgeon and salmon carcasses and freeze them. At the dock on my out, I chop up the frozen carcass (guts and all) with a sharp axe (bring a chopping block) and put them in the bait cages and the guts and small pieces in the cups. I also save all of my unused (re-frozen) and old bait (3 year old smelt works good). Chop it up too and put the pieces in the bait cups. Haven't bought crab bait in years.

Animal abuse is a crime and I hope anybody who would feed cats to snakes, etc burn in *ell. Also anybody that would use a small dog as bait for coyotes is a lower life form than the coyotes themselves.

In some parts of the world cats and dogs are a common food source for humans. I have a taste for beef, pigs, and wild game. Are cats and dogs a higher form of life then the animals we choose to consume???

I personally would never knowingly eat a dog or cat unless I had nothing else to eat, nor do I agree with using cats to feed snakes or dogs to bait coyotes. Just playing devils advocate on this one.

One more legal question....You can legally feed a snake gerbils, mice, rats, bugs, etc....are cats legally protected from this practice? Is it really a crime???

The defining factor is this: "Is the animal in question cute and fuzzy?" If it is, then people will be in an uproar...if it is not, then adios muchacho!! (just being devils advocate)

We have a "pet" cat running around our office grounds. Everyone but me calls the damned thing "Romeo", I call it Bait. Doesn't seem to mind.

Pet cats are fine. Feral cat's, including the ones my neighbor claims to own but roam the neighborhood anyway, SUCK.

I've tried the usual crab baits, ie: raw chicken, salmon and steelhead heads, turkey, cat food, but like most people I've found that shad works much better than anything else....except for.....Kentucky Fried Chicken!

We took a bucket of KFC out crabbing one time for lunch. Later in the day we ran out of shad, so we took the left over pieces of KFC chicken, along with the skin and bones from what we'd eaten and put it in couple of the crab cages. I can honestly say we caught as many or more crab using that bait than we ever do with shad. True story!

The downside - KFC is way over priced to use as a regular crab bait.

we....uh....I mean..I knew some guys(yeah thats it) who trained hounds to hunt cats by using wild barn cats, they all smell the same i guess. just take the kitty for a long walk in the woods, and secure it to a tree. Go back to the truck and take the pup to the scent and turn em loose. It's almost instinctual. This was years ago in Idaho, not in oregon where it is probly illegal.

Funny how you can't cull a herd of ferrel cats in oregon, but go right ahead and smoke that joint?

I wish I could count how many piles of dog shiatt I've stepped in in my yard, and I don't even own a dog. I grew up with cats, and never stepped in a pile of cat shiatt once. Hmmmmm maybe dogs would make good crab bait?
