OK here's my opinion. I shoot with a single vertical pin. I sight it in at 30 yards for hunting. If I need to take a 20 yrd shot I will only be a couple inches high. 40 yard shot, bring the pin up a little. I call it my bb gun theory. I never had multiple sights or settings on my bb gun but I could kill any bird in town. It's a more instinctive way to shoot. I believe I'm better in the field because of it. I don't use a range finder. John Elway doesn't use a range finder to throw a football. No outfielder uses one to make the throw to third base. They just know. Practice practice practice. I like to put a Judo tip on an arrow and shoot stumps or whatever as I'm screwing around out in the woods. I don't try to figure out the exact yardage, I just try to shoot it.
This theory is not for everyone. Some people like to sit in a tree stand and range landmarks around them so when an amimal comes in they have a reference. That makes sense. I'm just a little too A.D.D. to sit in a stand all day. I'm on foot spotting and stalking. When the shot presents itself, I'm not busting out the rangefinder, I'm nocking an arrow.
So do what's best for you. My favorite hunting partner uses multiple pins and is extremely successful. It's just a personal preference.
