scope or no scope?
on my 45-70 guide. It is going to be a brush gun but you never know when you will run into one that is out a ways, even in the timbers. I have a spare scope but cant decide what to do. Thanks

Re: scope or no scope?
I would probably go with an aftermarket ghost-ring type aperture sight. If you put a scope on it, make sure that you can mount it so that you have a clear field of view when you bring the rifle up. The benefit of the guide gun is that its quick in cover. If the scope isn't perfect when you shoulder the rifle, you'll lose that quickness. If I scoped an 1895g, I'd probably put a very low powered scope with a bottom range of no more than 1.5x and a top end of no more than 4 or 5x. The Leupold VX-II 1-4x20 would be a good choice. Or maybe the VX-III 1.5-5x20. I would get a heavy reticle to stand out better in dim light. Also, a shotgun or muzzleloader scope might be a good choice with the parallax adjusted for 50 yards instead of 100. That would give you a clearer image for the close shots.

Re: scope or no scope?
More good info. Thanks all. I only have a 3/9/40 and no money to buy right now so I may stick with the open sights for quick shots. Thanks!

Re: scope or no scope?
The Leupold 2.5 costs less than $200(last I looked) and weighs about 6.5 OZ that would be a good one.

Re: scope or no scope?
looking through the latest midway, i find NO 2.5 fixed power scopes in a good quality. just variables. at one time you could buy them from most quality scope makers. and would be perfect for a 45-70 or 450 marlin lever gun. i would not put a 20mm scope on one, i have a burris 1.75x5x20mm on a gun. it is fine for full light hunting, but early or late day or if it's raining it is not a good choice. just a little rain obscures your view, where a larger diameter will allow usable sight picture

Re: scope or no scope?
On mine I used a williams fire site. Basically a peep site in the back and a fiber optic front site.

Re: scope or no scope?
I like the ghost rings, you have metal sights below, scope above. Just make sure the rings aren't so high they get in the way of your metal sights, I had that happen once on my winchester lever action.

Re: scope or no scope?
I checked the price on the 2.5X Leupold and it's now $269.
When will some manuf. make a circle fiber optic ghost ring with a fiber optic front site? Low light is the real problem to overcome in my opinion. Blacktails comming out at dusk or going away into dark timber just AT first shooting time. Darn brush.Good luck and post a pic when done.

Re: scope or no scope?
2-7 leupold compact on my stainless guide gun. Would not have it any other way.

Re: scope or no scope?
1.5x5 leupold. I can see thru tiny holes in the brush to find a spot for the bullet to fly thru. Fast, precise, and pretty idiotproof if ya use scope caps.
The thick crosshairs make sense in this application.

Re: scope or no scope?
I have a ghost ring sight on my Savage 99 and really like it a lot. They run about $90 or so.
If you scope it, go with a Burris Fullfield II rather than a Leuopold VX-I or II. The Burris beats the heck out of the Leuopold VX-I and VX-II as far as I'm concerned.

Good to hear. I have a 300 short mag T3 that I will use for distance hunts. There is just something about being in the timbers that I love. I may just use the one I have but will look into some of the others mentioned on this thread. I'll keep doing the homework on it. Thanks again everyone.
