Re: bear scents
Unless you wear it it is illegal and considered baiting.
I would suggest soaking your clothing in bear in heat scent and then lay real still and wait.

Re: bear scents
Whatever you do, dont accidently spill a bunch of grape soda on an old stump in an area with lots of bears, you may get mauled if you stick around.

Re: bear scents
Whatever you do don't dump food grade anise on a stump either.

Re: bear scents
And whatever you do.....don't forget & leave your camo-T squirted with Smelly Jelly cover scent hanging on a branch to "air out" in the breeze.
Which reminds me... have you guys seen any Smelly Jelly called "Black Ant Feast"? I can't find any anywhere!
This no scents thing is about a joke. You can for deer but can't for bear?
I know of no F&G LEO that will go out of their way on this issue. Don't ask, don't tell policy I think.
But it is illegal, just to be clear.

Re: bear scents
Question did Measure 18 specifically ban scents in the measure?
In otherwords can we petition the commission for a rule change on this subject?

Re: bear scents
So setting down your grape/anise/blackstrap molasses sport drink and forgetting where you put it would not be out of the question.
What was the question again?

Re: bear scents
Keep all your hunting clothes in a plastic bag filled with cedar branches.
Include your boots. Don't put them on until you get out into the woods.
Once you get to your favorite spot take out the bottle of vanilla extract
that you have in your pocket. What you do with it is your decision. It does work well to cover human scent.

Re: bear scents
if you sit in camp cooking bacon all day, 1 piece at a time. you might be able to sit in camp taking a nap and have a bear wake you up with a kiss

Re: bear scents
Here is what it says directly from the regulations -
"Using bait to attract black bear and using dogs to locate and tree black bear is prohibited. Applying a scent, or attractant to ones body, or clothing while worn, is not baiting."

Measure 18 is not in the hands of the commission. This was a ballot initiative that was voted on and passed by the people, so to change it would take another ballot measure. We are stuck with it until then, unfortunately.

Re: bear scents
I know, I know.....just asking WHAT the measure said.
Scents are a far cry from a barrel of donuts.
Guess I'll just have to wait until my hunting partner flops againts said stump and fall asleep. No Chad, I have no idea why your jacket is now covered in maple syrup?

LOL....my wife was going to go with me last year until I told her she had to wear a black robe with the pockets stuffed with bear in heat scent and maple bars.

Re: bear scents
I would argue that scent is not baiting as there is no food value.

Re: bear scents
Chad, I'm appalled! That's only something I'd do to a good buddy.
Not the mother of my children or the woman I trust while I sleep at night. Simply appalled!

You guys are lucky. Scents are against the law in WA.
