Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
I am going to purchase a 24' Northriver Seahawk. Any seahawk owners with kicker motor size suggestions. I am going with a single 250 hp main and leaning toward yamaha 9.9 high thrust with TR-1 gold. Is it enough ? I would hate to undersize to much. With my 20' boat the 8hp usually only idled during trool. Thanks guys.

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
Which Sea Hawk are you talking about? 24' Sea Hawk O/S or the regular Sea Hawk? My Boss has the 23' Sea Hawk with twin 115's and T8 the T8 does fine for trout or trolling the ocean for salmon. I have a friend who has a 22' O/S with T8 it does fine as well. We where out 8 miles out of Fort Bragg when he lost his main engine and the T8 got us in. Wasn't fast of course but it did the job.

That new 9.9 looks like a great motor. Hope you have good luck with the TR-1.

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
Not a Seahawk owner, but I do own a T8. I have it on a 26' Striper. Brought me in from 9 miles outside of LaPush when I lost a starter on the main. Slow run back in in rough conditions, but moved us along well eneough that I didn't need to ask my wingman for a tow. Had the 9.9 on my 24' Wellcraft, that worked well to. These hi-thrust motors are great!

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
9.9 is overkill and heavier than T8.
T8 pushes everything 12-28ft very nicely....including my 7,500lb 25ft'r @ 6mph full trottle. In a kicker, more HP is a waste as you only need enough HP to reach your max hull speed. (That's displacement speed not planning speed - about 5-7mph depending on length). You could put a 25hp kicker on your Seahawk and still only make 6-7mph because you will still be well short of HP required to get up on plane. Hull speed is a function of the length of your water line not HP.
Look for lightest weight solution that is reliable and will get the job done. 8hp is popular but 6hp would get it fine if they made such a motor w/ hi-thrust prop. I have had good luck with Yami T8 Hi-thrust and been served well by Clemens Marine in Gladstone.
PS. My T8 has brought me in from 33miles out with nary a problem.

Your T8 handled your boat like a dream, I wish mine did such a good job.

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
I would consider the Honda 20hp power thrust, if I had your Boat, 350cc @ #108, for comparison the Yamaha t8 is 197cc @ #102. nuf said.

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
I have a 21.5 ft. NR Commander with a T-8. More than enough power and just as reliable as can be. Think the 9.9 hp may be more than is necessary and the extra dollars are not unsubstantial. FWIW!

Re: Seahawk Owner Kicker Size?
I had a 22 foot Seahawk for 6 years and it had a 15 horse Honda. I put the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust on the new 25 footer. I don't buy for a second that the 9.9 is "overkill". I love it and highly recommend it.
