I got to meet Crusty earlier this year. What a wonderful guy. We spent a few days fishing for Willamette springers and told me some great stories. My favorite is some of the pranks he would pull on other fishermen.
He would make up these pieces of wood about an inch square, paint them purple and drill a small hole thru them. After catching his fish, he would rig up his pole with these things he called a "purple woody" and walk back to the car. Inevitably he would meet somebody walking into the fishing hole. They would see the fish in his hand and ask what he caught it on. He would go off on how great these purple woodys worked, and would hand them a few from his pocket. He would watch and they would rigged up there pole with a "purple woody" and go to fishing. Crusty would go home laughing about how gullable fisherman were.
I think I may make up a few and see if I can convince somebody they are the latest greatest thing since the round corky.
I look forward to some more stories next year with Crusty.
