Furbearer license for coyotes?!
Old Salt asked in another thread about licenses for fox and bobcats. I was looking through the regs. and the ODFW regs list coyote as a furbearer i.e. need a furbearer's licence. No closed season, but a furbearer nonetheless.
Am I reading this right?? Check out these links in the regs.
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources...ng/small_game/
(small game hunting regs - coyote is a predatory animal, no closed season, no bag limit, no weapon restrictions; but protected game includes "furbearers")
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources...6furbearer.pdf
(trapping and hunting regs for furbearers - coyote listed as no closed season etc., but looks to me like you need a furbearer's license.)

Re: Furbearer license for coyotes?!
it pertains to commercial harvest of coyotes, to kill them is always legal, to kill them and sell the skins requires a furbearers license

Re: Furbearer license for coyotes?!
I called odfw and talked to a very nice lady who said yes, they are listed there but no one knows why, it's come up a couple of times but it's still there. Only a hunting license is needed (like we thought) to shoot them. She didn't know the answer about buying/selling so she checked and sent me this email:
"Hi Glenn,
I checked the coyote regulations and you do not need a permit to
sell the pelts. You only need a permit if you want to buy pelts.
Have a good weekend. If you need anything else, feel free to either
call or email.
Nancy"
There you go.

Re: Furbearer license for coyotes?!
furbearer is defined by the 2008 ODFW reg book as:
"furbearers are beaver, bobcat, fisher, marten, mink, muskrat, otter, racoon, red fox and gray fox. a furtaker's license for furbearers is required to take furbearers including bobcat and fox. in addition, a bobcat record card is required prior to hunting or trapping bobcats. for more information please refer to the current oregon furbearer trapping and hunting reulations, available at any ODFW office or by contacting ODFW, trapper education 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, OR 97303"
no mention of hunting coyote, but i do believe you need one if you plan on trapping them.
on pg. 8 under "land owners," bullet #4, it also states: "a landowner or a landowner agent does not need a hunting or trapping license to take preditory animals (preditory animals are defined on pg. 90 as: ("preditory animals means coyotes, rabbits, rodents and feral swine which are destructive to agricultural crops") on land they own, lease, lawfully occupy, or have charge of or domination over."
so from what i understand, i really wouldn't worry about getting popped by a stater for hunting coyotes unless youre shooting them out of a coyote farmer's pen.

Pretty well sums it up. A hunting license is required on public lands and landowner permission and knowledge is all that is required on private(no license).
