Default CR Bankee Day

I spent some time today and yesterday at a couple of the popular CR bank fishing beaches. It was a great couple of days to spend on the river.

Plenty to see with Bluebills plying the air just off the beach and geese constantly overhead. I always enjoy watching the ships come and go as well.

I was most impressed with the fact that both spots I visited were free of litter. No bottles, cans, tackle trays, plastic bags, nada. The whole area in both places was spotless and there were plenty of people to generate trash if they had been so inclined. It was great to see.

Fishing was great but the catching was less than spectacular. I saw one nice too many fins chinook landed yesterday and heard of three others that were caught at the beginning of the tide. Nothing for today except the rumor of one steelhead. It sounds like Thursday was pretty hot (you should have been here yesterday!).

Red/black stripes spin'n glo with red prawn was the hot ticket that day but you never know from one day to the next what the go-to color is going to be. Standard rigging seems to be lead at the bottom, a few inches of leader, a three-way swivel with 30-45" of leader to your spin'n glo (with or without prawn), followed by a length of leader longer than the spin'n glo leader, a second three-way swivel with a duplicate spin'n glo set up, then main line.

Do you too often reel your bankee rig in only to find that your spin'n glo has tangled with the main line or otherwise fouled and you have been fishing a three inch section of totally twisted leader and an upside down spin'n glo? Here is a trick that seems to cure the problem in the majority of cases: Buy a length of that stiff tubing that they use to make spinners. Cut a 4-5" section and slide it down your leader toward your spin'n glo while you tie off to your three-way, then slide it up over the end of the three-way swivel. It will hold the leader away from your main line and dramatically reduces tangled gear. I have tried various metal wire spreaders and find that the leader likes to hang on the spreader wire ends resulting in more tangles. Enjoy.

I was also very impressed with the friendliness of the anglers I met the last couple of days. Lots of waves as I drove by trying to pick a spot and friendly exchanges with everyone I talked to.

Good weather, clean beaches, nice scenery and friendly people. Even without the fish it was a pretty nice couple of days.

Sounds nice and relaxing... I love seeing the bankies run up the beach to set that hook after the bell rings, almost as entertaining as catching a fish myself... almost

I'm going to Bank it tomorrow with my Dad. We are going to fish around Woodland bar. Say, how do you hook up the prawn to the spin-glo?

Thanks for the report!

I love watching all the waterfowl this time of year. I do enjoy watching them from the blind as well, but my motives are not so innocent...

HA - You can rig them like ****** illustrated or you can use a double hook solid tie like a short mooching rig. To rig this way, put the bottom hook under the middle of the prawn and come out the mouth, take a couple turns around the prawn with your line and hook the top hook through the tail.

You can also use a single hook and add half the prawn, either tail or head. That way, if your bait comes off you still have the spin'n glo working with the hook in close. I use a little yarn when fishing this way with some scent.

Jimmy, that depends are where ya go. Just ask the other folks on the beach, most of us will tell ya, and holler at ya if the pole is bending too from a fish. But remember the fish do not care for the strong current as they have a long way to go yet.
