I spent some time today and yesterday at a couple of the popular CR bank fishing beaches. It was a great couple of days to spend on the river.
Plenty to see with Bluebills plying the air just off the beach and geese constantly overhead. I always enjoy watching the ships come and go as well.
I was most impressed with the fact that both spots I visited were free of litter. No bottles, cans, tackle trays, plastic bags, nada. The whole area in both places was spotless and there were plenty of people to generate trash if they had been so inclined. It was great to see.
Fishing was great but the catching was less than spectacular. I saw one nice too many fins chinook landed yesterday and heard of three others that were caught at the beginning of the tide. Nothing for today except the rumor of one steelhead. It sounds like Thursday was pretty hot (you should have been here yesterday!).
Red/black stripes spin'n glo with red prawn was the hot ticket that day but you never know from one day to the next what the go-to color is going to be. Standard rigging seems to be lead at the bottom, a few inches of leader, a three-way swivel with 30-45" of leader to your spin'n glo (with or without prawn), followed by a length of leader longer than the spin'n glo leader, a second three-way swivel with a duplicate spin'n glo set up, then main line.
Do you too often reel your bankee rig in only to find that your spin'n glo has tangled with the main line or otherwise fouled and you have been fishing a three inch section of totally twisted leader and an upside down spin'n glo? Here is a trick that seems to cure the problem in the majority of cases: Buy a length of that stiff tubing that they use to make spinners. Cut a 4-5" section and slide it down your leader toward your spin'n glo while you tie off to your three-way, then slide it up over the end of the three-way swivel. It will hold the leader away from your main line and dramatically reduces tangled gear. I have tried various metal wire spreaders and find that the leader likes to hang on the spreader wire ends resulting in more tangles. Enjoy.
I was also very impressed with the friendliness of the anglers I met the last couple of days. Lots of waves as I drove by trying to pick a spot and friendly exchanges with everyone I talked to.
Good weather, clean beaches, nice scenery and friendly people. Even without the fish it was a pretty nice couple of days.
