Plunking
When I first learned to steelhead fish it was mainly a cast and drift show. But when the water was high and muddy we would plunk; a big spin-n-glo and a big gob of eggs in a back eddy or a side pocket of the river. It was darned productive, considering the alternatives. I don't hear anyone talking about this technique any more and I haven't done it in years. Has it stopped working? Probably not. I may just have to give it a try until the rivers come back into shape.

Re: Plunking
Pete,
I met you at the IFish Stock party. I read all the posts and have wondered this myself until a month ago . A friend of mine was pluncking and he had a couple of take downs he missed on white yarn and eggs. I was too busy fiddling with my Curado learning to cast and freeing up Backlashes.
You seem to get out alot and to be a pretty knowledgable and friendly guy. If you want a partner some time let me know and maybe we could do a trip together. I don't catch many fish ,but, I really like to learn new techniques and meet people with the fishing addiction. If your on to this , let me know and I can shoot you an E-mail.
Thanks and Good fishing and hopefully catching.
Tight lines and Fresh eggs. Tom

Re: Plunking
Did a fair amount of plunking on the EF Lewis until I discovered jigs a ways back. Haven't had the ol' plunking rod out since. Jigs just work too danged well.

Re: Plunking
Pete,
Sounds like you're describing the Walla Walla about half hour from me.
Plunk:
1) Big Spin 'n' Glow. 2) Big gob of eggs. 3) Back Eddy, or Side Pocket.
Thanks.
hb, if you get the chance to hook-up with Pete, take notes.

Re: Plunking
Hmmm... I think it's the fire I remember best! When I first started steelheading, on the pre-St. Helens Toutle, we used to cozy up to the old timers cuz they always had a nice toe warmer going. Somehow those fish stand out in my memory more than most.

Re: Plunking
Quite a few ifishers regularly fish the boat ramp area at Oxbow Park. There will be someone there allmost any day from Thanksgiving on. They generally plunk small spin-glows and sand shrimp and really do pretty well. There are other places on the Sandy such as just below the I-84 Bridge and numerous spots along the Old Columbia River Historic Highway, between the Troutdale Bridge and Stark Street Bridge. Good luck in finding a good plunking spot.

Re: Plunking
For all you plunkers: WAZZAT (lighted spin and glo) Blinking red lights work really well on metalheads. 215 on, 155 landed since Sept. 1st! Not bragging,( although I am pretty proud) just highlighting the point that they do work. These can be purchased at Bobs mercantile in Kelso. Fishermans might also carry them.

Re: Plunking
Well heck I'm an old plunker from way back. Sharpened my teeth on the Willamette river at Meldrum Bar. Thats in Gladstone Oregon. Spring chinook and plunking go together. Spin Glos and prawns. Give it a try. Let us know how you do. Good luck............Fishhead Vic

Re: Plunking
I tried it today for the first time in ages.
It was fun! No fish, but very nice, and very relaxing!

Re: Plunking
In high, dirty water it is very effective to plunk sometimes only about 6 feet off the bank. Mr steelie likes to get out of the heavy current.
