Default Steelhead jig advice Please

Hi All,
When fishing with a Jig is it better to tie the line directly to the jig or use a swivel snap?
Does it make a difference?

I like to get the occasional bump off the bottom when jig fishing. If I snag, I at least want to keep my float so I use a swivel and some lighter leader with my Jig.

I prefer to tie the mainline directly to the jig and run a fixed float set up. However, if you prefer to use a sliding set up, then you will tie your mainline to the swivel and then tie your jig on the leader. Running a sliding set up will allow you to fish deep water easier while a fixed set up works great for smaller rivers. Try both ways and see what you like best.

fishbane i always use a swivel with a lighter leader. once you figure out that you have to fish more agressively you wont want to donate a foat with your jig.

i have a thing for finding the bottom, which is sort of like trying to find out how close to a moving train you can get your head - when you find out, you realize that's not how you wanted to find out. i've seen way too many thill floats drift away to spend for those suckers anymore.

here's a tip: a plain old wine cork is great. drill a small hole through the center and insert a small straw or coffee stirrer. then paint the top orange or whatever color shows up best for you. they'll float straight up with a quarter ounce jig under them and the weight makes it easy to cast. if you happen to hang up, it's a lot less painful to break off.

Thanks All,
amperstat good idea. I do tend to use cork floats. Although I did recently order a thill to try.
Another quick tip:
Stock up on your floats in town at fishermans supply they are only .45 cents. I lost one last weekend and stopped by Tilliamook sports to replace it and they wanted 2 bucks for a cork float!
