Re: fish carcasses
Yesterday I saw a headless carcass of what appeared to be a dark silver on the northbound I-5 Pacific Ave onramp in Olympia. Must have been a nasty windgust to send it all the way up here from down there.

Re: fish carcasses
mmmmmmm.....salmon bombs....
Saw it on TV last night. The reporters must have been perilously close to the drop zone to get the shots they had on TV. I would love to hear that Joe Donlan or Tracy Barry or whoever got one on the skull (assuming they didn't get hurt that is). That would be high-larious. Can you imagine the mess a half-gone carcass makes when it hits from a couple hundred feet? Strawberry yogurt bombs....mmmmm.....yogurt.......

Re: fish carcasses
i saw it on tv this morning. pretty cool to watch. they did say that no reporters were hit by the falling carcasses. i'll bet it's super ripe up there right now.
springer4you: the state can do things that regular citizens can't. try this sometime: get one of those police light bars, put it on top of your car, turn it on and see how many red lights you can run through before they pull you over. (by the way, this is meant to be funny. please don't get offended.)

Re: fish carcasses
I saw it on TV last night also, didn't seem like they were dropping very amny carcass's. Maybe only 10 to 15 per load. I would think that you would want to bomb a whole lot more than that in there to get a good effect.
I suppose you can overload a stream if your not careful.
I saw one that had to go in the 40's splash down. That was impressive!!!

Re: fish carcasses
I love all the work those helicopters can do,but dropping fish from the sky seems like an overkill. My mother used to work for Columbia Helicopter and they are a top notch company, but at 1500 to 2000 dollars an hour,I'll hand carry them and throw them in for 50 an hour. Think its tax dollars or fish and wild life money. I also read in the paper they were also going to drop live fish, that Igot to see.

Re: fish carcasses
I agree with "dosaraan" that helicopter time must be very expensive, however, as a science teacher, and someone who strongly believes in stream conservation and looking at the actual "biology" of our watersheds, this idea does make real sense. The stream ecology has always flourished on the cycle of anadromous fish completing their cycle and as far as the food web is concerned this idea has real merit. The expense of using helicopters, etc, however......????? I don't mind of few of my License $ going for this as long as commercial fishing $ go there too...

Re: fish carcasses
Springer4u and Ampersat, The fish and wildlife folks actually had to get a permit from the DEQ to plant the carcasses. Without one, they would actually get in trouble for the dumping of the dead fish. The ODFW does not have free rights to try these experiments on their own. Weird huh? I thought so too. They truly are realizing the effects that industry has made over the past decades on our fish. Too little too late it may be though. As in the case of the following story.
There's a little creek that runs into the clackamas river that is said to have had wild steelhead runs on it years ago. Until, that is, the highway dept cut off their access home years ago when building Bakers Ferry Rd off of Springwater Rd. Now they have realized their error and are fixing the waterway to make it all better. Over a million dollar fix that we get to pay for. Problem is, it's been decades since they screwed it up. Do they want us to believe that those natives are still waiting out in the ocean thinking "Hey maybe we'll make it home this year." Are they planning on restocking the creek with their new and improved nates? Are you confused? So am I. If you have any info on this project or if I have the story wrong in any way please post as I am truly disturbed by all of this.

Re: fish carcasses
I'm not sure but I'll bet it has to do with cross-contaminating. Some rivers may have diseases like IHN and those carcasses could only be planted in thier home stream.
