Default Thanksgiving fishing weekend...

So how many of you are fishing this weekend? Looks like a sturgeon weekend if the winds cooperate with me for Saturday. I got those "honey you will watch the kids and football on Friday while I go Christmas shopping" blues. Got to spend all that hard earned cash with half a million other crazy lady shoppers that will be out there.

Not all bad. Football good!!!!! Leftovers good!!!!! Honey, can you hand me the remote before you go?

So whats everyone else up to and where are you going? (to fish that is).

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

P.S. Would'nt be great to see a turkey named bin Laudin roasted USA style? Get'em boys!!!!!

C&E,

Ifishers might want to give the lower Sandy a try for winter steelhead. I've caught them before Thanksgiving, from Troutdale to Cedar Creek. Usually there are some chromers finning their way up the river after the first flood in November. We had some pretty good water coming down, so I would expect some early fish. BTW, I too would like to see bin Laudin's head served on a platter for Thanksgiving...Wouldn't that be special!

Fishin freak, I'll be fishing below Grants Pass. My Parents live just off the Redwood highway and just before you cross the Applegate River. There is a park (I forget the name) down the road just after you cross the Applegate river about 4 miles. The park as some good Steelhead water and I will also fish Robisons Bridge and I will probably fish down lower in the river too. Im going to stop at the tackle shop (on the Redwood highway just out side of GP)and ask where might be good place to go. Im taking my eggs. I'll do a little drifting and I'll run my side planner a little. I'd like to hear of some more reports on where to go on the Rogue.

Mr4Am
I know the area, just haven't fished it much. Looks like excellent steelhead water. I am going to be drifting the upper strech above Shady Cove and the lower stretch below Agness. There should be fish everywhere (steelhead and some Coho). The Medford paper printed last week that the hatchery hole ( below cole rivers,11 miles up river from shady Cove) is just nuts with Steelhead right now.
There is alot of good bank access in the upper stretch and some good water below Shady Cove with limited bank accesss. The stretch above Tou Velle State park is also a notorious producer of steelhead. If Straydog is out there, he can give you more help than I. Straydog????????? Best of luck MR4AM

Well...the "Missions" will be on the Clack more than likely Fri, Sat, and maybe Sunday too. The driftboat is sold and the the buyer is coming from Idaho to pick it up sometime this week, just don't know which day yet. Still trying to talk the "Mrs. " into fishing Thursday while the turkey's roasting.

It's time.

I'll be deer hunting down on the Santiam while Mom is cooking dinner. Have three tags to fill between us before the end of the month. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. Maybe chase after a few steelies if the water looks better than it did last weekend. I'm not sure I want to waste any time watching the Lions get their 10th(?) loss of the season.

Fishing freak, I might just see you up near Shady Cove on Friday morning. I read the news paper report you had posted the other day and it sounds to good to be true. I figure I'll get up there and ask where the Hatchery hole is. It doesn't look to far from Grants Pass.Good luck

MR4AM,

Take hiway 62 out of Shady Cove and head towards Crater lake for approximately 10 miles. Right after Casey park take a left ( before bridge) to Cole rivers fish hatchery. Then take a right at the first road ( after a small park). There is bank access on both sides. You will need waders to effectively fish one side of the river. Be careful not to fish to close to the spill way. The sheriffs have issued a number of tickets this year. There is actually good bank access all along this stretch. Casey park and Rogue Elk park can also be productive). Look for me if you are there friday. I will be in a red and tan colored drift boat. Good fishing to you!

I will just have to wish all of you the best of Thanksgiving fishing. I only ask that you leave a couple of fish for me during the following week. My wife has me by the ear and said NO. My son would sure like to go but according to the weather, he may not. He hasn't been able to afford to buy a wet suit and scuba gear yet, so he may wait too. Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Steelhead Dreams

At this time of year,
The Steelhead start to appear.
We rush the streams to catch them.
We are hoping they are near.

The water is a dirty brown.
We are full of hope.
The river is bank full.
Do I really want to risk my boat.

At last I can finally launch my boat.
The river's starting to clear.
Down the Wilson I'm a fishin,
To catch one that's for sure.

To see the rainbow side
on that jumping fish.
Makes me happy,
And fills my every wish.

I wish you all,
the greatest Steelhead season.
My love of fishing,
Is my only reason.

Broke fall chinook camp on Monday, so I'm done for awahile. The only fishing related thing I will be doing is draging one of my boats home with me Sunday afternoon from Tillamook. I will not be fishing but spending time with wife, kids, Mom, Brother's family and Sister's family at the beach for a few days.

I was planning on doing some backtrolling out in the Willamette at Oregon City, but I hear the water isn't looking very good. Sure would have been nice to hook that early winter steelhead Thanksgiving morning....

I was down in Grants Pass the end of last week and over the weekend. I'm not real familiar with the river and left my sled at home so had to explore the bank fishing. I just went out and poked around. Saw lots of coho just below Savage Rapids Dam. Saw several coho and one summer Steelhead caught there. The coho were darker than I would have taken but still looked to be in pretty good condition considering how far they had come. Limit is four, so if you find good ones that are biting you can take them home.Fly fishermen were picking them up in the fast water below Savage Rapids and hardware fishermen were taking a few. I didn't see anything caught on bait but I'm sure a few were. I talked to several people who had done quite well on steelhead in the Gold Hill area the previous week. Mostly drifting night crawlers. I didn't see much boat traffic on the river. Personally I wouldn't waste my time at "Jim's Sporting Goods" asking how fishing was or where to go. When Smitty owned the store there was always some good info given out. The new owner doesn't seem to care. He also has a very limited supply of tackle. I'm sure I have more in my home than he has in his store. When I asked where they were catching fish Jim said "everywhere". When I asked what they were using he said "just about anything". I sure expected a little more out of a tackle store owner. Maybe it's just me. Anyway... good luck to those headed that way. Rivers were in good shape. They had risen a little early last week but stayed clear. Biggest concentration of anglers was seen below Savage Rapids Dam. Quite a few fishing below Gold Ray Dam too. Otherwise very few anglers out and about between Gold Ray and lower end of Grants pass.

I fished below Galice in the Argo area most of the afternoon. Two half pounders was it for me and I saw but one other fisherman.

It rained steady all day, hard at times. The river is rising but definately not dirty yet by any means. It is running at 2 JTU's, it fishes fine up to about 10 ro 11.

I will fish upriver near Grants Pass or above it Friday and possibly tomorrow in the morning.

Got one small coho last Sat. at Pearce Riffle but as one poster noted, they are getting pretty dark.

Best quality fish would be found at Agnes and I hear there were a lot of fish there last weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving and travel safe, it was a zoo already last evening!
