Default Hello All

I would like to start off by saying Hi to everyone and tell a little about myself. I am originally from Washington, near Chehalis, I spent 4 years in the military and then got hired and move to Portland. I have lived here a little over 5 years. Not familar with the area I spent the first year of fishing at Henry Hagg Lake, since no one I worked with fishes or are even from this area it was hard finding good fishing holes. Then I discovered "Fishing in Oregon" and Fly Fishing in Oregon", really great books, I normally carry the first in my truck at all times. I have also viewed other websites for information, then last week I remembered seen an iFish decal on the back of a truck. I have been reading the archives and current board and articles over the past week, this site is great it has everything I have been looking for and from what I have seen, if I can't find it here one of you will know the answer, and I will probably be asking a lot of questions. I also hope to get the chance to meet other who fish in the area, it's so much better fishing with a buddy.

One question I have, Jetty fishing, particulary the North Jetty at Tillamook, how is fishing there this time of year? Is it a bad idea to go there this time of year? And I saw in a thread posted last May that a group night fished from the jetty, is it still legal to night fish the jetty or is that just a reg. for lakes and rivers?

Thanks for any help you can provide, I'll try not to drive anyone crazy with too many questions, I've just got that hunger.

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the board Cutter!!

Hey, you want to go Jetty fishing sometime, drop me an email. I have been out a few times and have done ok, but no real smashing successes yet. Are you looking for rock fish or others?

I haven't fished the jetty during the winter months, might be dangerous this time of year with the ocean as rough as it is.

The guys/gals on the board here should be able to answer about any question that you have.

Anyway, welcome and have fun.

Paul

Hi Scott (Cutter). Welcome to dreamland. The N. Jetty of Tillamook bay is a great spot to fish at night. The best fishing is had in late winter/early spring when the bottom fish move in shore to spawn. Bigger and more fish then.

You can try it now but there's a few things to know. Avoid days with high winds and heavy seas. One trip and wasted gas will teach you why. The waves break right over the jetty!

The other thing is to fish the tides. The fishing is best when the water slows down and you can use light gear. I favor crappy jigs with green curly tail worms. 1/4 to 1/2 oz. seems to work the best. Cast, let it sink and jerk and sink all the way back to the rock you're standing on.

This method works from 1/2 hour before the slack (high or low) to 1/2 hour after. Keep casting and at some point in that time period you'll get one on. Fish hard then because the bite usually only lasts 30 minutes or less.

There's other methods too but that one is my favorite. Right down from the Coast Guard tower is the spot.

Good luck and be careful, the wet rocks are slick, use felt bottom boots if you have them.

Welcome Cutter!! You'll have a lot of fun with all the great information and help you'll recieve from the many people who make up IFish. Don't be shy about asking questions, just fire away. As you've already pointed out, lots of questions can be answered reading the archieves, lots of great help there.

Concerning the Tillamook north jetty. We trolled along the jetty yesterday and did see a few people fishing without much luck. I find the better jetty fishing in late winter and spring. That's when the bottom fish start moving closer to shore to prepare for spawning. I start to fish near the jetty's at night in late February or early March. The jetty and night fishing is open year around. When I plan a trip, I plan to fish the incoming tide with minimal change between low and high.

Good luck with your fishing and welcome to our community.

Gregg

Welcome Cutter,
You have some great advice already on timing and how to listed above.

The first 3 or 4 dates with my wife was fishing from the N Jetty at Tillamook. It was mid April and we caught lots of fish.

Maybe we can put together an ifish trip again in the spring, The last ifish jetty trip didnt turn out very productive (fish count that is) but it was fun. We were a little later in the year, I would have to go read the archives to find the date we went, but it seems like late May from memory.
