Default New Game Cop in Town

Some of you may have seen this in Sundays Oregonian in Bill Monroe’s column. It seems that there is a new Game Cop in town. The article gives a brief resume of the new boss. Now I don’t know anything about the OSP nor do I follow what they do. Well, I guess I’d better clarify that by saying I do enjoy the stories about them catching idiots shooting at stuffed animals. The only contact I have with them is when they harass me on the river.

But looking at her resume, one question stands out. Is this the best they have? Whether it’s a man or woman doesn’t matter to me but I guess I would expect to see a lot better resume. I mean really, how does a person that has “little game experience” get the top job? Well she's been an LT in the Game Division for 4 years and I guess shooting one deer makes her experienced now. This is another one of those cases where we have less than qualified people running agencies or departments. :depressed: I wonder what the Game Enforcement Officers think?

Here’s the link, decide for yourself. If you know more info please let us know.

Since Monroe has a habit of only picking out little pieces of a story.... I'll reserve judgement until I see her entire resume posted. I'll guess she has done more than what he said or she wouldn't have gotten the position.

Waterdog, I've got to disagree. She sounds like an excellent choice for the job.
The woman has 18 years law enforement experience with OSP, served as a detective and undercover narcotics officer. Then four years as a lieutenant in game enforcement....what more do you want? Catching snaggers isn't quite rocket science; maybe she'll jack up the enthusiasm for bagging poachers to the level applied to druggies.
Besides, running the dept. is a management job and I'm sure she proved herself as a dept lieutenant or she wouldn't have been considered for the promotion.
The fact that she's a woman, and isn't an avid sportsman is irrelevant to me, but I sense that is the basis for your disapproval.

I assume to be the top dog you need to know budgets, personnel issues, and politics. Not necessarily game management??

Waterdog - What are you doing? Momentary loss of reasoning

You just questioned the top game cops credentials. As I read the article there are 100 officers in the field. I think they may have just got an "all points bulletin" describing a White Motion Marine to be detained and harassed. And you thought you were harassed earlier.

I doubt you will get anybody to go in your boat with you again (including your mom). You know the boat, ....the one with the big police bullseye you just painted on the side.

WaterDog, Hope you don't mind but I edited your post to fit the page. With the long URL, scrolling side to side, to read your thread proved a difficult task. To prevent this problem in the future, click on the "URL" key under the "Instant UBB Code" heading, paste the url, press ok, then type the url title and press ok, your done. I simply said story, within your post.

Thought an explanation was in order.

About the story, hard to say for sure, time will tell. I do agree with others here, most of her job is really political. If her superiors trust her, then I'll do the same until proven otherwise.

I thought I said I didn’t care if it was a woman or not.

I’m just going by what was in the article. I know not all the facts are there but how in 4 years can you learn everything there is to know about Game Enforcement. Maybe Homer Simpson should head the Nuclear Regulatory Commission? How do you think the field guys feel about working for someone who has a whopping 4 years of experience in GAME ENFORCEMENT? Would you respect the person your working for if they know less than you? Yeah, yeah I know it happens all the time but that does makes it right? Gee the moral is really great as well in a situation like this. We all have jobs and have all been in this situation. Just think about it. As far as I’m concerned a GAME ENFORCEMENT Captain better know more than a little about Hunting and Fishing. Someone once said it takes an outlaw to catch and outlaw. I just hope the decisions are left to the people that actually know the job. That’s all.

But hey maybe all the OSP needs is an administrator in that position. If that’s the case, fine.

Oh, I have a grey top, ifish stickers, the boat is an 18 foot outback, I drive a Ford f-250, I'll be fishing the Columbia this weekend, and any Game Cop is welcome to check me any time. Is that bullseye big enough? Or should I post my hull numbers too?

Edit: Hookset, no problem. We shall see.

Four years experience as a game lieutenant. Sounds pretty qualified to me.

She's not going to be out there personally enforcing the game laws- the people who work for her will be. She needs to know how to manage people, and know the basics of what her people do. If she has only 4 years experience, no big deal. She knows the job, and should know how to manage the people who do the job.

Well Waterdog if she in fact has 18 years experience in law enforcement then i would say she is well qualified to do the job. The way i read it she will be in charge not actually out doing the job of a field enforcement officer. Even so if need be iam sure she could handle that as well. Law enforcement officers are trained to do many jobs and generally they are very well trained and can step in an work almost any field where they are needed, granted they may need to polish there act but they can do the job.

I happen to know Lt. Kok personally and I can't think of a better person for the job. No one works harder to keep OSP well educated and funded. Especially when it comes to dealing with the legislature. I am very confident she will be a fine choice to replace Lindsay Ball. Her position is a very political one, something she is more than capable of handling. As a hunter and fisherman, I wish her the very best and am totally confident in her ability to manage the division AND protect our game resources.

From what I am able to gather talking to game officers she is well liked and at least converses with the officers in the field, something which has been sorely lacking in recent years. OSP has been dominated for years by a good old boy network and it is kind of refreshing from a sort of good old boy standpoint to see some change. It is true that upper level mangement has little to do with field operations. Their job is to make it happen, not do it themselves. Budgets, reports, legislative hearings, connecting with other departments all part of the hierarchy. We don't necessarily need to send an officer to headquarters just because he/she was good in the field. The key to her success is going to be how she takes field input and uses it. Good luck Capt.
