man I suck
I just got back from a buddys house he is a guide and one of a very few prople I trust to give me the real scoop.
I was amazed to hear that he had boated 39 chrome bright metal heads in the last 2 days fishing customers.
I have yet to get one in the boat this winter I left there feeling like a total failure lol
I got a terrible skunk going on hope I can end it tomorrow.

Re: man I suck
Remember, he's doing it professionally. I haven't landed a fish since September. I've hooked 'em, or gotten bit, but nothing to the bank. But it will happen. Just keep at it, learn something each time, and enjoy the experience. Although I haven't gotten anything to the bank, I've had a good trip every time. That's what it's all about. (Or so I say when I'm not catching. )

Re: man I suck
ya I know I am the same way dont matter if I get them or not as long as I have a fun trip.
and yes I know he is a professional fisherman and probably one of the top guides in the state.
my timing this year just seems to suck I am always there a day or 2 after they cream them and the bite has disapeared or the river is on the rise.
oh well gonna go in the morning I know the river he is fishing very well and if there are still any fish around I have a fair chance as long as I dont spend my day leaving corkies in the tree branches lol

Re: man I suck
Quasi,
It's in the details. Ask your buddy what the "little" things are that he does and you'll unlock some huge clues. When you focus on the details, the big things take care of themselves. I'll bet you are sooooo close. Hang in there. When you get that fish. Stop and analyze everything that happened from how your rigged, to your presentation, the water, the structure, the take, and the hookset. Review it in your mind over and over. Then #2 will follow quickly.

Re: man I suck
With winter fishing, a lot of it has to do with the time you get to spend on the river. Some folks are lucky and can duck out of work at a moment's notice to go fish a prime condition. I'm not one of them. I work 9-5 M-F and the wife likes to have me home at the end of the day.
Outside of timing, it's all about reading the conditions and the water. If you think you know reading the water, change the temp five degrees. It will change quite dramatically. Not that I'm an expert: I'm still very much the novice. But for this season, that's the one big lesson for me. Hopefully, my studying will pay off!

Re: man I suck
Nobody suck's because of their lack of luck or fish catching abilities.
Enjoy fishing for what it is.
It is suppose to be a rewarding, relaxing experience, and not some kind of competition that creates some kind of stress!
I know a friend of mine posted awhile back that he is up for the competiveness of the sport of fishing.
Screw that!
Fishing is for relaxation and pleasure.

Re: man I suck
Would you rather have been working? As fishermen, we all know it's a numbers game. Stay in the water & it'll happen.

Re: man I suck
Speaking of sucking... I was fishing one of our Sw WA streams yestrday to have only one takedown on my jig setup. I set the hook to see a mid to high 30 inch buck , chrome bright roll and start going nuts. I fight him for 5 minutes with him running through every rock pile he can find. Cartwheeling and all. finally gets my line around a rock I can't manuever around and SEE YA! Man that sucked. That would have been the fish of the year to date. The guy next to me thought it was a springer because of the size but it was all steel. Hope to get a rematch with him today. Tight lines!

Re: man I suck
Just a thought but why don't you just spend a day with your guide friend on the river. You'll see the little things he is doing first hand and then you can try to duplicate them! It will probably be the best money you've spent on fishing in a long time. Nothing like on the water schooling!
Good Luck, Canyon Man

Re: man I suck
I have spent many days on the river with him he is my best friend and I have fished with him for close to 15 years. he is just the best at his job.
one day we were fishing a small river and pulled into a hole he made a cast boom fish on he lands it I make a cast not a nibble , he casts right behind me boom fish on, we boat that one and I make another cast nodda , he casts boom fish on, this continued untill he had boated 5 fish in that hole and lost 3 or 4 I never had a bite.
we were both using the same color corkie same leader length and he was using my eggs.
fish just seem to get suicidal for the guy he is the kind of guy that could go to a river that had only one fish in the whole system and at the end of the day its gonna be in his boat.

Re: man I suck
Ok It happens to others, thank God. I have been in what you would call a slump, (with my friends afraid to go out with me because it seems to affect them too) for a while now. I have always tried to remember that it is just good to be out and enjoy nature. Unfortunately that gets old after a few years. I recently got back from a trip down to the Umqua with a friend, for steelies, at a special hole that only a few locals know about, my friend and I watched 4 chromes be brought to the shore by the other 2 people in our group with only lost rigs being produced by us. Mind you my friend, who is an Ifisher and can attest to these accounts, has been doing this for years with almost guaranteed returns. I don’t know if I believe in luck, but after a while you start to wonder who up there you peeved off, because there is nothing more frustrating than doing what looks to be everything right and for it all to come off so wrong. And I’m still….. Your friend on the bank

Re: man I suck
Don't get me wrong, but humans stink.
I try not to ever touch anything from my leader down without first washing my hands or using something to cover up my human scent. I don't know if it's a matter of confidence or if it really works....but it seems to help me out. Just don't give up, keep at it, and be confident.
Oh, BTW, mumbling under my breath seems to help too.

Re: man I suck
I would like to put my .02 in here. I remember not so long ago that I was posting very simular posts. I couldn't catch a fish if it jumped in my arms...(way to slimmy!)
I've noticed in my limited time fishing that it doesn't matter what you are pitching....you've gotta know the bite and know when to set the hook. My friend and I will go fishing and he'll catch all the fish...we are using the same rod, reel, line, leader, hooks, corkies, swivels, weight...everything...(guides buy at least 2 of everything)..yet he caught the fish and I stood there. It was the hookset. I'm not saying that's your problem....I am speaking from my own experience. I ended up switching my weight set up and started getting fish. My friend likes to run a sliding weight...not me. I like it fixed. I feel the bottom and if there is a take I can feel it. He uses pencil lead, I like slinkies. Everyone is different and that's why fishing is so darn fun! If you are drifting a whole that you feel a ton of bottom or bites...lighten up and see if you can feel the bottom every 10 feet or so. Between the bounces I can feel something different from cast to cast, and lately that something different has been a fish!
I've noticed lately too that I'm paying a ton more attention to the scenery, maybe that has something to do with it. My .02
